Companies are figuring out they can do without thousands of people in a headquarter building in the Bay Area.

Much less the futility of trying to manufacture something in California. Why do you think manufacturing went to China in the first place?

Ca needs to turn into a red state again or all of our house values will tank.

Tesla is a manufacturing company that uses technology. It is not a company that produces technology. The economic considerations for manufacturing and technology companies are quite different. That being said, what is becoming clear is that many traditional l businesses such as retail stores and chains are not going to survive. Amazon, Target and Wal-Mart have been experimenting with ways during this crisis to shave off even more market share with home delivery. I went from getting one package every other day to receiving 4-5 Amazon deliveries a day and I realize that going to a couple of different stores to purchase the same items is a complete waste of time and gas. Restaurants in urban areas have been ramping up home delivery and curb-side systems that eliminate all in-store sales. Even Starbucks is moving in that direction. I wouldn't be surprised to see beauty salons and massage services go mobile to home locations. The down towns of many cities and rural areas are going to have to have to shift towards new economic models and customer retention models. Malls and strip-malls are going to become dinosaurs. And what dies big time in the cities will be even more true for towns like Sonora and Jackson.

As for jobs, CEO round-table discussions over the past month point to substantially more investment in automation displacing blue collar jobs with robotics and software.

Rural areas face particularly challenging times as gas consumption falls and road repair tax funds dry up. With electric cars increasingly replacing gas guzzling cars, states are going to have to go to a per-mile traveled annual tax that will be more onerous for rural populations that have to travel further on a daily basis. As more retail is conducted via distributed logistics, delivery charges in rural areas will probably be increased relative to the same services in denser urban populations.

It is clear none of us are going to go back to the way it was. Hundreds of thousands of jobs (maybe even millions) will never come back in their current form. This is not a California problem, this a global challenge, equally true for California as it is for China.

Tesla and others are technology companies, they are not manufacturing per se. You might note the factory pic showing robotics.

They use technology, but they are not in the business of making technology -- they make cars. If you look at the their balance sheet, they have a very nigh cost-of-goods relative to usual tech companies and they have a much higher ratio of tangible to intangible assets, the opposite of most technology companies.

They are a heavy manufacturing company. This is like saying wal mart is a tech company because they have computers at the checkout stands.

      Oracle is a Tech Company.
      Intel is a Tech Company.
      Apple is a Tech Company.
      Salesforce is a Tech Company.
Google is part Tech Company, Part Advertising Company.
Tesla is a car company. Who happens to be 5 years ahead of the legacy car companies when it comes to integrated tech into their cars.

"I hope the housing market plummets like bird poop to the ground- splat!"

That emotional comment is about as dumb as it gets. You think if technology companies leave and the housing market collapses, there will be anything left of the Calaveras economy? Tourism will vanish....hotels, motels, most restaurants. The building industry will disappear. The tax base will collapse and public safety employees, school teachers, and utility workers will get laid off. The hospital and many schools will close. The tech industry (hardware, software, networking, pharmaceuticals including bio-medicine, media) have helped make the California economy the 5th largest economy in the world.

Manufacturing, on the other hand, like Tesla is not sustainable in California where the cost of land and labor is just too high. Musk is just trying to get Texas or Nevada (where land is plentiful and labor is cheaper) to pony up some steep tax discounts. Losing Tesla is not a big deal.

          Hello?
          People are smarter than that.
You think if our real estate prices plummet, the Bay Area people won't buy up here?
Smart people buy up everything when prices go down.
In time, the prices go up again when houses are no longer available.
          Simple logic.
Locals should be happy if prices plummet. Families would then be able to own a home.
Those same families can raise their kids, send them to good schools, and hopefully the value of their home will steadily rise. Happens throughout history. You just have to be patient. A 30 year loan is a better investment than renting.
These nonlocals are the only thing keeping the local economy going. Timber jobs are dead unless you trim trees for a living.
Manufacturing will never invest here. Too costly to ship the manufactured goods to market. It's the crappy roads.
Tourist dollars are our only option. That, and small business.

Peterbilt trucks used to be made in Oakland. International Harvester trucks were made in San Leandro. Chevy and GMC pickups were made in Oakland. Richmond had a huge Ford plant.

Stupid California legislature has been burning bridges for a long time.. California hates all business - except government.

If Tesla leaves, California has a ton of tech companies and infrastructure. Let’s name a few; Microsoft, Intel, Facebook..............And everything else in Silicon Valley that remains. Tesla is but a margin in the state’s revenue.

It’s not as if he doesn’t all ready have a bunch of other factories in other states- the Fremont Location is just one of many.

And Elon is acting like all billionaire-baby’s (Orange Trump) and threatening to sue everyone and anything they can. Including the state as a whole. Ring a bell? How are we actually going to sue China for example? You can’t......that’s like Iraq suing the US for depleted uranium poisoning..........

This is easy to resolve. If people don't like the direction their neighborhood is going they can move to a new neighborhood. If people don't like the direction that a State is going, there are 49 others they can choose from. And DC.

There is no absolute right and wrong here. It's what's right and wrong for you. If you decide you're just not part of the future of California, we sincerely wish you well and hope you find a home that aligns with your values. It's all good. Some of us fled red states to come here for the exact same reasons.

Follow the money. Mr. Musk's compensation is primarily stock and related to delivering on a number of milestones. He is also motivated to not be diluted in his ownership of Tesla, which means he needs to continue to buy (or be granted) stock to preserve his relative control. (last time I looked he owned about 19% of the company.)

So, whenever you see him making statements in the media (including the 'stock is too high...' from 2 weeks ago) ask yourself why a rational person would do that? A rational person would do that to keep the stock price low because he is trying to buy back his diluted position, or because he is about to be granted some 'dollar value' worth of stock, which is more valuable from a control perspective if it means more shares (at a lower price.)

Don't kid yourself. Elon isn't going anywhere. And he is anything BUT an icon for the right-wing / red state audience if you know him. He is a rational actor, who is acting in his best interests. You know don't know what his motivations are, so they may look illogical.

Now, there is some truth to the fact that 'we' in Silicon Valley don't need our big shiny towers and campus' with free luch. But those things all happened for a reason. We don't want to live in Texas. Or Reno. Or Whereever. And if you dissect the tech jobs that are going to those places, you'll find they are not the 'rock star' developers (who want to live in San Francisco or Palo Alto) it's the back office functions. And that's fine. There is no reason why Accounts Payable needs to be done from Market Street.

Further, the capital, and VC community remains primarily bay area centric. Yes, there are VCs in Texas. And planes to take CA VCs to Texas. But again, it happened for a reason. They WANT to live in Palo Alto and Ross. It's a lifestyle choice.

Well there’s SpaceX and the Boring Company beyond Tesla, so Musk is good even if Tesla were to fall to pieces-which it won’t. That bug-eyed S. African Elon still feels bitter apartheid ended and he lost his royalty status for just being white.

As an entrepreneur he found a complicity with the right wing nuts and tax cuts for the wealthy white Americans, it’s the heaven of money and fame he wanted that he couldn’t get in a country that ousted supremacy. He found racial inequality in America (and big business, let’s not forget he started PayPal) that the old S. Africa infringed upon, and it felt like home...
