Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Arts Council’s fourth show for the Ovations 2015 Performing Arts Series brought Le Jazz Hot, to Dr. Elliott Smart Performing Arts Center on Sunday. Le Jazz Hot is the quartet of the Hot Club of San Francisco who continue the tradition of fine French Gypsy Jazz. Their music is the offspring of Gypsy culture, 1920’s Paris, and American Jazz. Inspired by Django Reinhardt, it is sophisticated yet it has a sentimental quality. It is sometimes flamboyant. It is sometimes melancholy. Leader and guitarist, Paul Mehling, together with Isabelle Fontain on guitar and vocals, Evan Price on violin, and Jamie Mather on bass, make up the most venerable gypsy band in the US. Their music is gypsy jazz but is distinctly American. They honor Reinhardt’s style without purely imitating him and without watering down the gypsy tradition or diluting the music. Together and singularly, Le Jazz Hot’s performance is jaw dropping. These superb, multitalented musicians are impressive not only for their mastery of multiple instruments and vocals, but also for the simple joy they exude onstage...

Angels Camp, CA...The Mark Twain Biopic “88 Days” Premiered on Saturday night at the filled performing arts center in Angels Camp. The film captures the pivotal time for Mr. Twain when he found his voice and made the transformation from reluctant newspaper man into the literary icon he became. His yarn about the Celebrated Jumping Frogs of Calaveras County made that transformation possible for him. It was pivotal for our area as well as it has colored much of our post gold rush history. From towns such as Twain Harte to Bret Harte High School and our annual celebration of all things Frog. Those 88 Days live on....

Murphys, CA...Randall “Randy” Michael Lagomarsino, born Sept. 9, 1948, passed on Saturday Feb. 21, 2015 at the age of 66. Randy was born and raised in Murphys, CA. After graduating from Calaveras High School and attending Columbia College he went on to work and retire from PG&E after 40 years as a meter reader. Randy also served on the UPA, UPUD and Murphys Sanitary. In his free time he loved to spend time on his ranch with his 6 grandchildren...
