Presidential Proclamation on National Park Week, 2021

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/19/2021 09:58 AM
Washington, DC...The renowned environmentalist and author, Rachel Carson, wrote in her seminal book Silent Spring that, “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” Nowhere is the truth of her observation more evident than in America’s national parks, which are irreplaceable treasures that amaze us, inspire us, fill us with pride, and belong to all of us in equal measure.

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/19/2021 12:56 PM
Pasadena, CA...Monday, NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter became the first aircraft in history to make a powered, controlled flight on another planet. The Ingenuity team at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California confirmed the flight succeeded after receiving data from the helicopter via NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover at 6:46 a.m. EDT (3:46 a.m. PDT).

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter captured this shot as it hovered over the Martian surface on April 19, 2021, during the first instance of powered, controlled flight on another planet. It used its navigation camera, which autonomously tracks the ground during flight.

Former Vice President Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale 1928 – 2021

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/19/2021 08:15 PM
Minneapolis, MN....Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale (January 5, 1928 – April 19, 2021.  The following is a statement from his family.  "It is with profound sadness that we share news that our beloved dad passed away today in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  As proud as we were of him leading the presidential ticket for Democrats in 1984, we know that our father’s public policy legacy is so much more than that.  The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was one of his proudest – and hardest fought – achievements.  In the course of his years in the U.S. Senate, he understood the sense of reckoning that this country then faced, and was committed to that work alongside Hubert Humphrey, Josie Johnson, Roy Wilkins and so many others.  We are grateful that he had the opportunity to see the emergence of another generation of civil rights reckoning in the past months.

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/18/2021 09:49 AM
Sacramento, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom released the following statement on the March jobs report which showed that California added 119,600 jobs in March and 156,100 jobs in February:  “California’s economic recovery depends on bringing back the businesses and jobs we’ve lost over the past year. That’s why today’s jobs report, which showed that California added 119,600 jobs in March, is so encouraging – especially following February’s report showing an additional 156,100 new jobs created, which was 41 percent of all new jobs created nationwide. We still have a long way to go, but with over 24 million shots in arms and more kids getting back into classrooms every day, this is the steady progress that we need to bring California roaring back.”
