Valley Springs Man is Fifteenth Case of COVID-19 Confirmed in Calaveras County

Valley Springs, CA...On Tuesday May 26, 2020, Calaveras Public Health confirmed an additional case of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. This case is an older adult male from Valley Springs. The individual is currently hospitalized. “A person at any age can become seriously ill from COVID-19, that’s why it’s important to do everything you can to protect yourself, your family, and your community,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “We live in a county with a much older population and older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 illness,” said Dr. Kelaita.

Counties Statewide Can Reopen Places of Worship for Religious Services and Retail Stores

Sacramento, CA...The California Department of Public Health today announced the statewide reopening of places of worship for religious services and in-store retail shopping. Modifications are required to keep Californians safe and limit the spread of COVID-19. Subject to approval by county public health departments, all retail stores can reopen for in-store shopping under previously issued guidelines. Under new guidance, places of worship can hold religious services and funerals that limit attendance to 25% of a building's capacity – or up to 100 attendees, whichever is lower – upon approval by the county department of public health.

San Andreas, CA...On Sunday May 24, 2020, Calaveras Public Health confirmed an additional case of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. This case is an adult male who resides along the Upper Highway 4 Corridor. The individual was not showing symptoms at the time of testing. “As people observe Memorial Day weekend this serves as a reminder that coronavirus doesn’t take weekends off,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “We urge people to take preventive actions to lower their risk of getting COVID-19 as we enjoy recently opened areas of Calaveras County.”

Local COVID-19 Testing Opening Soon at Frogtown for Calaveras & Tuolumne Counties

Angels Camp, CA...As part of efforts to expand COVID-19 testing throughout the State, a testing site serving people from Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties to be open effective Friday, May 29. The testing site will open at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds located just outside historic downtown Angels Camp. OptumServe, a health services partner with the State of California, will coordinate services with the public health officials from both counties. “We are very pleased to have this expanded access to testing available to our residents. Increased access to testing will allow our community to identify cases quickly and stay in containment.” said Dr. Liza Ortiz, Interim Tuolumne County Health Officer.

Shutdown Affecting Healthcare Systems as UW Medicine Furloughs of 1,500 Workers Due to COVID-19 Costs

Seattle, WA...UW Medicine announced temporary furloughs for approximately 1,500 professional and classified non-union staff to help address the financial challenges caused by COVID-19. Leadership also notified relevant unions of its intent to furlough represented classified staff and is actively negotiating the impacts of those plans. These actions are necessary to address the unprecedented estimated financial impact of approximately $500 million to UW Medicine due to COVID-19.
