Jobs Down -33,000 in September...Hurricanes Blamed |

Washington, DC...The unemployment rate declined to 4.2 percent in September, and total nonfarm payroll employment changed little (-33,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. A sharp employment decline in food services and drinking places and below-trend growth in some other industries likely reflected the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

San Andreas, CA...BOARD OF SUPERVISORS NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING LEAD AGENCY: Calaveras County Planning Department, 891 Mountain Ranch Rd., San Andreas, CA 95249 2014-064 AMENDMENTS TO TITLE 17 REGULATING CANNABIS CULTIVATION AND COMMERCE: The County proposes to amend Title 17 to replace Chapter 17.95, an urgency ordinance adopted on May 10, 2016 with a permanent ordinance banning the cultivation of and commercial uses associated with cannabis, including testing, distribution, and manufacturing. An Environmental Impact Report, State Clearinghouse #2016042019 has been prepared for the subject ordinance.

San Andreas, Calif. – Oct. 5, 2017 – Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) today announced that three of its employees, Hayley Litzenberg, Robyn Price and Bridget Proctor will be recognized among more than 300 winners across Dignity Health as Acts of Humankindness Award Winners for exemplary acts of compassion and humankindness demonstrated over the past 12 months. Dorrington Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Golf Cart Collision |

Vallecito, CA...On September 5, 2017, CHP San Andreas officers responded to a fatal collision involving a golf cart on SR-4 west of Redhill Road, which resulted in the death of Cody Agasi-Horn. During the collision investigation, officers determined the golf cart was recently stolen from private property and was being towed behind an unknown vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene of the collision and did not contact law enforcement or emergency medical services as required by law.

Mark Twain Medical Center is the Most Popular Hospital for Calaveras County Residents |

New York, NY...Recent data shows that Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas saw the most Medicare discharges out of all hospitals for residents of Calaveras county from October 2015 to September 2016 by accounting for 494 and 23.36 percent of the 2,115 total discharges from county residents during the timeframe. Rounding out the top five in total discharge volume for Calaveras County residents was Adventist Health Sonora, which accounted for the 2nd most discharges with 361 and 17.07 percent of the county resident market share, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, which accounted for the 3rd most discharges with 251 and 11.87 percent of total discharges, Sutter Amador Hospital, which accounted for the 4th most discharges with 154 and 7.28 percent of the total discharges and Doctors Medical Center of Modesto, which accounted for the 5th most discharges from Calaveras County residents with 87 and 4.11 percent of the total discharges.

West Point, CA...When filmmaker and award-winning writer, Lisa Michelle, of West Point, decided to bring her screenplay, Common Ground, to life, she knew that Calaveras County was the perfect location. The rural atmosphere and the children who reside in West Point, Wilseyville, and Rail Road Flat represented the authenticity in the story that Michelle wanted to tell. The supporting characters and extras were cast entirely from Calaveras County residents.

2nd Quarter Gross Domestic Product or GDP Raised To 3.1% Growth Rate |

Washington, DC....Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.1 percent in the second quarter of 2017 (table 1), according to the "third" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 1.2 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "second" estimate issued last month. In the second estimate, the increase in real GDP was 3.0 percent. With this third estimate for the second quarter, private inventory investment increased more than previously estimated, but the general picture of economic growth remains the same. (see "Updates to
GDP" on page 2).
