Calaveras Tourism Grows to $193,000,000 in 2017 ~ Calaveras CVB

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Tourism is an economic heavy hitter. Preliminary data for 2017 shows an increase of 3% from $188.5 million to $193 million in overall tourism spending in Calaveras County. Visitors spent most on food service and food stores combined for a total of $69.3 million (up from $68.5 million in 2016) followed by lodging at $45.2 million (up from $43.8 million in 2016). Gas and local transportation saw a 2% increase over 2016.

Calaveras County Public Works Director to Retire on June 2nd

San Andreas, CA...Jeff Crovitz, PE, submitted his letter of resignation and intent to retire from his position as Calaveras County Department of Public Works Director. Mr. Crovitz has served during turbulent times in the wake of the Butte Fire, Tree Mortality & 2017 Storm Damage. It was reported out of closed session at today's board meeting that he intends to retire and his last day with the county will be June 2nd.

Next Round of Local Transportation Planning Grants Include Calaveras & Amador

Sacramento, CA...Caltrans announced today the next round of local transportation planning grants totaling $41 million have been awarded. Local agencies will put this money to use for planning efforts and projects that support more sustainable communities, reduce transportation-related greenhouse gases and adapt for the effects of climate change. “These grants will provide much needed funding to support the efforts by local and regional agencies to improve transportation in their communities,” said Caltrans Director Laurie Berman. “Planning is a crucial first step in creating projects that can ultimately lead to more long-lasting transportation improvements throughout the state.”

Stockton, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is hosting a Career Fair in Stockton and is inviting members of the public to learn more about jobs that are available with the department. With the passage of Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act, which is projected to raise a total of $54 billion through 2027, Caltrans is expecting a workload increase associated with accelerating construction projects and addressing deferred maintenance needs.

San Diego, CA...The law firm of Baron & Budd announced that it will file lawsuits on behalf of 30 California counties against many of the nation’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors for their role in creating a widespread diversion of prescription opiates for nonmedical purposes. The suits seek an abatement remedy in addition to legal damages to reimburse taxpayers for money spent providing social resources in response to the opioid crisis.

Governor Brown Releases Revised 2018-19 State Budget

Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today released a revised state budget proposal that boosts education funding to an all-time high, fills the Rainy Day Fund to the brim and directs billions of dollars in one-time surplus funding to combat homelessness, improve mental health services and rebuild crumbling infrastructure. “We’re nearing the longest economic recovery in modern history, and as Isaac Newton observed: What goes up must come down,” said Governor Brown. “This is a time to save for our future, not to make pricey promises we can’t keep. I said it before and I’ll say it again: Let’s not blow it now.”
