Washington, DC...The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today issued U.S. patent number 10 million. More than just a number, patent 10 million celebrates the rich history and strength of the American intellectual property system dating back to the first U.S. patent, signed 228 years ago by George Washington on July 31, 1790, and issued to Samuel Hopkins for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer.

Sacramento, CA...Yesterday, both houses of the Legislature approved the state’s 2018-19 State Budget and a handful of budget trailer bills that assist in implementing the State Budget Package. It should be noted that the State Budget Package remains incomplete – there are a number of remaining budget trailer bills awaiting action, including measures pertaining to Cap-and-Trade allocations and to address Disaster Response Emergency Operations. Over the next several days and weeks, further items will be considered and adopted. The $200 billion state spending plan includes $139 billion in General Fund expenditures, $57.1 billion in special fund expenditures, and $3.9 billion in bond expenditures. Comcast Makes $65 Billion All-Cash Proposal to Acquire 21st Century Fox

Philadelphia, PA...Today, Comcast Corporation (“Comcast”) delivered a letter to the Board of Directors of Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (“21CF”) setting forth the terms of a superior proposal by Comcast to acquire the businesses that 21CF has agreed to sell to The Walt Disney Company (“Disney”) for $35.00 per share in cash, which represents a premium of approximately 19% to the value of Disney’s all-stock offer as of 12:00 p.m., noon (Eastern Time) on June 13, 2018. The structure and other terms of Comcast’s proposal, including with respect to the spin-off of “New Fox” and the regulatory risk provisions and related termination fee, are at least as favorable to 21CF shareholders as the Disney offer.

Federal Reserve Continues Edging Up Interest Rates

Washington, DC....Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in May indicates that the labor market has continued to strengthen and that economic activity has been rising at a solid rate. Job gains have been strong, on average, in recent months, and the unemployment rate has declined. Recent data suggest that growth of household spending has picked up, while business fixed investment has continued to grow strongly. On a 12-month basis, both overall inflation and inflation for items other than food and energy have moved close to 2 percent. Indicators of longer-term inflation expectations are little changed, on balance.

PG&E Begins Aerial Patrols to Spot, Speed Wildfire Response, May Preemptively De-Energize Lines During Fire Hazards

San Francisco, CA...Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has begun its daily aerial fire detection patrols across hundreds of miles of its service area. This year, PG&E has added two new routes to the patrols which assist the U.S. Forest Service, CAL FIRE and local fire agencies with early fire detection and response. Early detection of smoke or fire allows fire agencies to quickly respond to accurate locations.
