Yosemite, CA...Mariposa Grove and the Wawona Road remain closed. Limited visitor services will be available. Yosemite National Park announces Yosemite Valley will reopen to all visitors at 4:00 pm on Friday, August 3, 2018. Limited visitor services will be available inside Yosemite Valley, including campgrounds, lodging, and food service operations. Yosemite Valley has been temporarily closed since July 25 due to smoke impacts and for firefighting operations along El Portal Road and the Wawona Road due to the Ferguson Fire.

GDP Climbs to 4.1% in 2nd Quarter

Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 4.1 percent in the second quarter of 2018 (table 1), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 2.2 percent (revised). The Bureau emphasized that the second-quarter advance estimate released today is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (see "Source Data for the Advance Estimate" on page 2). The "second" estimate for the second quarter, based on more complete data, will be released on August 29, 2018.

Governor Brown Requests Presidential Emergency Declaration for Direct Federal Assistance for Carr Fire

Sacramento, CA...As wildfires continue to burn throughout the state, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today sent a letter to the President and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requesting a Presidential Emergency Declaration for Direct Federal Assistance to further support the communities impacted by the Carr Fire in Shasta County.

USDA Rural Development to Present $178,000 Rural Business Development Grant Award to Central Sierra Economic Development District

Murphys, CA...USDA Rural Development California State Director Kim Dolbow Vann will present the Central Sierra Planning Council, a subsidiary of Central Sierra Economic Development District (CSEDD), with a $178,000 Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) award at a ceremony today in Muprhys. Grant money will be used to perform a feasibility study to subsidize wood building products composed from biomass removed from surrounding forests. This will address impacts of biomass on wildfire and aid in affordable housing construction. CSEDD will also work to expand and revitalize business within the region. More than 25 jobs are expected to be created.

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) awarded Career and Technical Training (C&TT) scholarships to a total of ten high school students during recent award night events. Seven Calaveras High School students, one Bret Harte High student and two Mountain Oaks students will each receive $1,500.

Sheriff's Behavioral Health Liaison Receives Award

San Andreas, CA) On 7/18/18 the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was notified that “Behavioral Health Liaison” Brenda Hanley is receiving an international award for “Leadership in Human Rights and Civil Rights” from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The Sheriff’s Office nominated Ms. Hanley for the award. Ms. Hanley is an employee of Calaveras County Health & Human Services Agency and is assigned to the Sheriff’s Office to assist with calls for service regarding individuals with mental/behavioral health issues. More specifically Ms. Hanley assists Deputy Sheriffs in the field, at the hospital, and in the jail by working on short and long term solutions for individuals with behavioral health issues.
