Letter To The Editor On The Judge Swift vs Healy Campaign. ~ By Kristy Slocum |

Angels Camp, CA...The California Code of Judicial Ethics states that, “A candidate for judicial office shall not knowingly, or with reckless disregard for the truth, misrepresent the identity, qualifications, present position, or any other fact concerning ... his or her opponent or other applicants.” In a recent ad, lawyer Tim Healy misrepresented the qualifications of Judge Hugh Swift, his opponent in the November 4 election. He totally ignored Judge Swift’s 13 years practicing law in San Diego County. He suggested the Judge did not have a college education; of course Judge Swift has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of San Diego, and a Juris Doctorate (JD) from California Western School of Law. He also neglected to say Judge Swift is currently a Superior Court Judge, having adjudicated thousands of cases in Calaveras County and as Court Commissioner in Amador County. Apparently, he decided voters did not really need to know these facts.... |

Judicial Campaign in Calaveras County ~ Letter To The Editor By Tricia Slavik |

Murphys, CA...Call me naive, but I am one of those people who believe everyone is inherently good and honest and would certainly expect a candidate for judge to have the highest integrity. I am dumbfounded about what I have been reading about Tim Healy's tactics against his opponent, Judge Swift. I don't like the ugliness of politics and am still trying to figure out why judges are elected officials. It seems to me that judges should be the most qualified person for the job. But. alas that is not how it works.... |

Merita Callaway Is Always Helpful. ~ Letter To The Editor By Suzanne Friedman |

Murphys, CA...Over the course of the past ten years, the board of the Murphys Community Club (MCC) has received many requests from local residents to construct bocce courts in or around Murphys Park. The initial effort began in 2008 with the formation of interested volunteers joining a committee and enlisting the talents of a then local landscape architect to draw up professional plans. Unfortunately, due to property line issues, those plans were thwarted and the project was shelved for future consideration. In late 2013 the MCC board formed a partnership with Angels‐Murphys Rotary Club to revisit the project, and with the assistance of District 3 Supervisor Merita Callaway and the Calaveras County staff, a new location for the courts was selected and the project is now well underway.... |

Outside Spending in Calaveras County? ~Letter To The Editor By Mark Bonar |
Posted by: thepinetree on 10/13/2014 08:05 AM

Arnold, CA...Few can dispute the fact that outside political spending is designed to influence the outcome of elections. By outside spending, I mean election expenditures such as the infamous Super PACs and donations from special interest groups. Unfortunately, the U. S. Supreme Court recently opened that door very much wider. These outsiders make these contributions in hope of being able to control the candidates they fund...

Don't Be Misled ~ Letter To The Editor By Bob Reagan |

Murphys, CA...All counties in California must have at least two superior court judges. The actual number is decided by the size of the county. Calaveras has two; Los Angeles County has over 400. The vast majority of judges are originally appointed. Our presiding judge John E. Martin was appointed in 1995. Judge Hugh K. Swift was appointed last year. The appointment process is grueling. To be considered, an applicant must have practiced law in California for at least ten years. After filling out the necessary paper work, each applicant is thoroughly evaluated by the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE). The commission is a non-partisan agency of the State Bar of California, an administrative arm of the California Supreme Court.... |

Dear Members and Community Leaders,
In times of water shortage with rationing, it does not make sense to drain the remaining water in our reservoirs to save fish downstream. In fact, experts note that lowering the water level can cause an increase in temperature that will potentially be harmful to juvenile fish. The plan to release water will be very hurtful to the people and especially the farmers, to say nothing about our local economy....

Dear Editor, If you care about Ebbetts Pass, Calaveras District 3 you need to read this. I have had to make a tough decision about the November 4, 2014 election. What needs to happen is to elect a Supervisor FOR the people who live and work in Ebbetts Pass and Murphys. After much contemplation about who would be best to lead District 3 as Supervisor, I have come to a decision which may surprise some of you....
