Angels Camp, CA...The 2023 Calaveras County Fair & Frog Jumping Jubilee is officially underway at the Soroptimist's Frog Jump Youth Parade led off the festivities. A good crowd was on hand for a great slice of small town Americana, Youth Floats, The Calaveras Marching Band, Beauty Queens, Dancing Groups, this year's Tom & Becky Thatcher all the way from Mark Twain's boyhood home of Hannibal MO. & much more. State Route 4 Closure on East Side of Ebbetts Pass Moved to Wolf Creek for Fishing & Camping Access

Markleeville, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 10 moved the closure on the east side of State Route 4/Ebbetts Pass from Gate #5 at the State Route 89/4 junction to Gate #4 at Wolf Creek at approximately 8:00 a.m. today (Wednesday, May 17, 2023).

Angels Camp, CA...In compliance with the request of a friend of mine, who wrote me from the East, I called on good-natured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, and inquired after my friend's friend, Leonidas W. Smiley, as requested to do, and I hereunto append the result. I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W. Smiley is a myth; that my friend never knew such a personage; and that he only conjectured that, if I asked old Wheeler about him, it would remind him of his infamous Jim Smiley, and he would go to work and bore me nearly to death with some infernal reminiscence of him as long and tedious as it should be useless to me. If that was the design, it certainly succeeded.
Angels Camp, CA...South Main Street will be closed from Bret Harte Road (near St. Patrick’s Church) to Vallecito Road on May 18, 2023 from 9:45 AM to approximately 11:15 AM for the annual Youth Parade. If you need to get around the road closure, use the Hwy 4 Bypass….or better yet, park your vehicle and watch the parade!
