The Calaveras Redskins Hold Their Last Redskins Homecoming Rally (Updated) |
Posted by: thepinetree on 11/03/2015 09:32 AM

San Andreas, CA....Depending on how the district implements the new law forcing them to change their Redskins mascot. Last Friday's Downtown Rally may have been the last Redskins Downtown Rally. If the mascot changes are needed or if it is just another instance of political correctness run amok time will tell. For the generations of Calaveras High Students who were very proud to be Redskins their choice is obvious. The district will not be forced to remove infrastructure but they will not be able to spend funds on existing things such as scoreboards etc. So as infrastructure reaches the end of it's lifespan the Redskin name will gradually fade into history. As someone with a measurable amount of Native American DNA I think the name change is just sad, political correctness that diminishes Native American culture and moves it further to the sideline of history and culture. The Rally worked and the Redskins went on to defeat their homecoming foes 42-7 (Editor's Note: My Great Grandmother was 100% Chickasaw. My father served as a 7th & 8th Grade Teacher and Principal of an elementary school on a reservation near Holbrook, Arizona for several years.)

All monies raised will be donated to the Central Calaveras Fire Fighters Association (CCFFA) and the Mokelumne Hill Volunteer Firefighters Association (MHVFA). “Many of our band members know of people who suffered losses in the recent Butte Fire,” states band director Mic Harper. “For instance, my two sisters had their homes destroyed in this tragic disaster. We feel there was no greater tragedy than the firefighters losing their own houses while trying to save others. We wanted to do something to show our respect and appreciation.

Rail Road Flat, CA...Friends of Rail Road Flat School would like to thank many organizations, individuals, and groups for the enormous amount of support and aide that the community of Rail Road Flat has received in the wake of the Butte Fire. While a large amount of RRF was saved, the outskirts were hit hard. The small communities up in the D2 region run into and through one another- we are all connected. Many of us live between Mountain Ranch and RRF, and call both home. Five of our current RRF School Families have lost their homes due to the fire. Additional local families with children in middle and high school, as well as many alumni and community members.
