More than 40 of Calaveras County’s most acclaimed winemakers, restaurateurs and plein air artists will converge at Ironstone Vineyards, 1894 Six Mile Road, Murphys, for the Eleventh Annual Taste of Calaveras from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22nd. The event features wine tasting, gourmet samplings, live music by the Bob Eisenmann Jazz Trio, food and wine demonstrations, local artists painting along with artisans on site and a silent auction featuring Calaveras experiences and Calaveras products. This race is designed to be a fitness challenge, pitting First Responders (Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement) and Military against the general public.  Show us what you’ve got! We are proud to be bringing a mud run to Mountain Ranch this year — the first of its kind!  We are planning on approximately 16 obstacles along the route that will range from fire fighter skills to strength and endurance tests. Participants will start and finish at the Mountain Ranch Park in the heart of Mountain Ranch.  All participants will receive a 2017 Stop, Drop & Mud shirt.

San Andreas, CA...The 49th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee saw some intense spelling competition on Thursday, April 6 at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium. Fifty students competed from the following schools: Avery Middle School, Bret Harte High School, Calaveras High School, Christian Family Learning Center, Copperopolis Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Toyon Middle School, Valley Springs Elementary

Sonora Man Loses Life During Tree Work On Whiskey Slide Road

Mountain Ranch, CA...We just confirmed with the Calaveras County Coroner that a Sonora man in his early 20s lost his life in tree work on Whiskey Slide Road yesterday. According to the Coroner's office a limb from higher up on the tree came loose, fell on the man and he sustained fatal injuries. Notifications to his family are still being made at this time. Mountain Ranch Industrial Accident Takes Life Of 21 Year Old

Mountain Ranch, CA...On 04/06/17 at 11:20 AM, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Whiskey Slide Road north of the intersection of West Murray Creek Road, in Mountain Ranch for an Industrial Accident. A 21-year old male who was employed by a tree cutting contractor was removing an oak tree from a rural property when a limb fell onto his boom truck bucket. The worker sustained major injuries and was unconscious when emergency services arrived. The 21-year old succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim’s name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Christopher Hiser, 22 From Sonora Lost His Life Yesterday In Tree Operations Off Of Whiskey Slide Road

Mountain Ranch, CA...The tragic notifications to his family have been completed and Calaveras County Coroner Kevin Raggio has released that it was 22 year old Christopher Hiser from Sonora that lost his life yesterday when he was struck by a limb from a tree. He was working for a tree contractor and was in a bucket truck and the limb which according to the Coroner's office was not that large fell from above where he was working. The limb was large enough however to tragically end his life and he passed away at the scene. Below is from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department that fills in a few more details.

Man Stabbed In Turner Park During Alleged Marijuana Buy

San Andreas, CA...On 04/01/17 at 8:30 PM, The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office responded to 345 St. Charles Street in San Andreas for a victim of a stabbing. Deputies learned that a 22-year-old man from Mountain Ranch was allegedly trying to purchase marijuana at Turner Park when a physical altercation ensued. The unknown suspect stabbed the victim with an unknown instrument and left the park. The victim walked from the park to a nearby business and asked for help. The citizen called 9-1-1 and the victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment and later released. The victim sustained a minor laceration to his back. He only provided vague details about the incident to the investigators.

Mountain Ranch, CA...Walking into the visitor's center at California Cavern, State Historic Landmark, you are greeted by a prehistoric cave bear skeleton, minerals of many shapes and sizes, friendly employees and a sign that reads, " Do not lick the walls". "We don't like cave wall licking." said Derek Pierce, manager of California Cavern, located southeast of Sacramento, California. "California Cavern is known for it's amazing formations, an underground lake and rich gold rush history dating back to the early 1800s, but cave wall licking has no part of it." Pierce said firmly.
