Caltrans to Close Mountain Passes in Advance of Inclement Weather & Chain Control Info

Arnold, CA...We posted a pass closing piece yesterday but this one has additional information on what R1, R2 & R3 Chain Control levels mean. Caltrans is scheduled to close Ebbetts Pass (State Route 4) and Sonora Pass (State Route 108) due to incoming inclement weather in the Sierra Nevada. These closures are currently expected to be temporary and not the long-term, seasonal closures that Caltrans performs on an annual basis.

Arnold, CA...The first of a series of storms will bring moderate to heavy snow to the mountains of Western Plumas County and the Northern Sierra Nevada above 6000 feet Wednesday afternoon into late Wednesday night. This will likely disrupt Thanksgiving holiday travel across Sierra passes. After a brief lull, the next storm is expected late Thursday into Friday, with snow levels expected to rise to around 7000 feet by Friday afternoon.

Ebbetts & Sonora Passes to Close Ahead of Incoming Storm

Alpine & Tuolumne Counties...Caltrans District 10 tentatively plans to close Ebbetts Pass (State Route 4) at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, and Sonora Pass (State Route 108) at noon Wednesday, Nov. 21. Those times are subject to change, and could be impacted by the behavior of the weather. These are NOT the long-term, seasonal closures that Caltrans implements annually on our mountain passes.
