Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/07/2009 02:33 PM

Time to Start Thinking about Planting Fall Garden~by Ken Churches

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/30/2009 10:30 PM
Dry pea vines and spent spinach may be all that's left of the spring garden in July, but by rototilling compost into nutrient-depleted soil, gardeners can jump start new crops for harvest in the fall. For gardens in warmer areas of the foothills, plant seed in July for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and other cabbage-family cole crops like kohlrabi, kale and collards. The plants will mature in the fall when it's cool, making crops sweeter at harvest because plant respiration decreases and more sugar accumulates at lower temperatures.....

Lavender Livens Herb and Flower Gardens~by Ken Churches

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/23/2009 01:34 PM
For a colorful and useful addition to the home garden, try planting lavender. It's well suited for the foothill’s dry climate and heavy soils, and few herbs match the uniqueness and versatility of lavender. Known for its distinct fragrance in perfumes and soaps, lavender is a popular ingredient in candles, sachets, bath oils and shampoos. It’s also used in cut flower arrangements and wreaths, and in dishes such as barbecues, vegetables and desserts.....

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/16/2009 07:02 PM
Heat, drought and pests make early summer a difficult time for foothill vegetable gardens. Cool-season cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are especially vulnerable. In warm areas, broccoli heads brown, cauliflower flowers too quickly and cabbage heads crack....

Irrigation Key to Vegetable Production~by Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/02/2009 10:36 AM
As hot, dry weather begins to stress home gardens in June, proper watering is critical for healthy young vegetable plants and quality produce. Watering is both a science and an art. Gardeners should learn to spot signs of water stress on plants. Water-stressed lettuce can be bitter, for example, while tomatoes and chile will often develop dead patches at the tips called blossom end rot. Water-stressed chile also tends to become more pungent, although over watering it can also increase incidence of chile wilt. Water-stressed sweet corn, meanwhile, can be poorly pollinated with fewer kernels on the ear.....
