Murphys, CA….The Native Sons of the Golden West (NSGW) is a fraternal order with roots dating back almost to the founding of California. Founded on July 11, 1875, the NSGW was organized for “The mutual benefit, mental improvement and social intercourse of its members; to perpetuate in the minds of all native Californians the memories of one of the most wonderful epochs in the world’s history–-the Days of ’49—to unite them in one harmonious body through the state by the ties of a friendship mutually beneficial to all and unalloyed by the bitterness of religious or political differences….

Arnold, CA...The Calaveras County Garden Club will hold its next general meeting on March 12, 2008 at Serafina's in Arnold. (The old "Weather Station" on the north side of Hwy 4.) The program will feature Jim Bergantz who is working to rally "green thumbs" to restore the operation of the Bret Harte High School Greenhouse. The objective of the Greenhouse Project is to modify the greenhouse so that it may be used as a teaching tool for Bret Harte students....

Gardeners often end the season with a supply of leftover seeds. They are often saved from one year to the next. Each type of seed typically remains viable and grows into healthy seedlings for only a certain average number of years. If your seed envelopes date back to the 1980s and 1990s, you'd be better off tossing them and buying new seeds for this spring's planting season.....

By making a raised garden bed or two in the early spring, home gardeners can plant earlier than planting in un-mounded soil. Soil dries and warms up more quickly in the spring in raised beds. Reducing foot traffic on the beds themselves reduces soil compaction, a bane to growing plants. Make the raised beds narrow enough that the center of each bed can be planted, watered and weeded from a footpath beside the bed....

San Andreas, CA...The 2007 Open Garden Days proved to be a winner for Master Gardeners and the public. First opening on the fourth Saturday of February, 2007 the public response was immediately positive and grew as the program became more widely publicized. When the garden closed last November, over 1,000 visitors had been to the garden to gain more information on a variety of gardening topics.....
