Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/14/2010 10:31 PM
Gardeners who like to try new things in the New Year might consider planting dwarf fruit trees, which add colors and shapes to the home landscape and greater variety to the family diet. Most dwarf fruit tree varieties come from grafting one fruit variety or scion onto another that serves as the root system. Dwarfing occurs because of restricted nutrient supply to the scion. Different root systems result in different sizes...

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/05/2010 09:26 AM
A good fertility program is the best way to prepare garden soil for spring planting, and winter is the time to begin the process. Analyzing your soil is the starting point. Take soil samples at several locations in the garden to assess fertility levels. Take samples from six to eight inches deep, the depth most vegetable feeder roots reach. Mix the soil thoroughly for a good, representative sample and use a soil test kit available at local nurseries.....

Wood Ashes as a Garden Fertilizer~by Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 12/16/2009 09:56 AM
At one time wood ashes were a chief source of potassium and much used in farming and horticulture. While not an important fertilizer anymore, wood ashes have become plentiful around many homes as more people turn to wood burning stoves and fireplaces for heat. It is better to put some of these ashes to beneficial use rather than have them take up space in our landfill. That care includes removing all dropped fruit and leaves that might be harboring pests. But even the most vigilant gardeners may need to spray their trees during the dormant season to reduce over-wintering pest and disease organisms....

Cold weather takes toll on home landscape plants~by Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 12/01/2009 08:23 AM
Those sad-looking landscape plants you are seeing in your yard are a direct result of cold weather. Cold can damage outdoor plants by causing burst cells and ruptured bark or by scorching or burning leaves. Plant cell fluids freeze and rupture the cell wall, or tender bark is repeatedly frozen and thawed. Tree or shrub bark may eventually split, usually occurring when extreme drops in temperature hit a plant when it is completely dormant....
