Calaveras Visitors Bureau Offers New Travel Writing Scholarships

Three Men Arrested for Felonious Fuel Thefts

(Valley Springs, CA) On January 8, 2013 Calaveras County Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a gas theft from Glory Hole Sports/Texaco in Angels Camp. According to surveillance video received from the store a white male adult driving a white truck stole 400 gallons of gasoline during the early morning hours of January 7, 2013. During the investigation the deputy discovered that a similar looking male driving the same truck stole 288 gallons of gasoline from the Shell Sierra Trading Post in Angels Camp on or about December 31, 2012...

Floriculture Building at Frogtown Has a New Roof!!

Frogtown, CA...Thanks to the Friends of the Fair and local contractor Micah Rolleri, the Floriculture Building has a new roof. The Roof had been deteriorating for years and was no longer weather proof. Fair CEO Giannini went to the Friends and expressed her concerns about the roof. The Friends took action and hired Rolleri to not just repair the roof but replace it. A new metal roof now tops the Floriculture Building. The building now can be rented year around and also store the Fair’s equipment.

Bob Trinchero To Serve Again as Fair Board President

Frogtown, CA...Bob Trinchero has been re-elected as president and Talibah Al-Rafiq will serve as vice president of the 39th District Agricultural Association, the Calaveras County Fair board, in 2013.“The board felt appreciative and confident of what we had done last year and felt it was best to keep the same officers in place,” Al-Rafiq said. Other board members include Gay Callan, Kathy Campbell, Evan Garamendi, Gloria Grimes, Darren Mills and Steve Wooster.

Arrest at Save Mart and Angels Camp Police Department Seeking Additional Information

Angels Camp, CA...Leon John Dyken, a 46 year-old transient, was arrested on several charges on the afternoon of 01-06-13. At approximately 3:50 PM on 01-06-13, an officer was dispatched to the Save Mart Supermarket in Angels Camp on a report of a possibly intoxicated subject that was touching children inside the store. Prior to police arrival, the manager of the store approached the subject and told him that he could not touch people in the store and asked him to leave. The manager followed the subject outside the store and waited for the police to arrive...

New Melones Lake Fishing Report for January 6th, 2012

New Melones, CA...Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,604,176 acre-feet of water. The lake level rose one foot this week, and is currently at 1014 ft. above sea level and 74 ft. from full. Water temperature has cooled and is 52-55 degrees. The lake is clear, to slightly stained. The lake has turned over. Trout: Good. Department of Fish and Game is now planting rainbow trout weekly at New Melones. With the lake turned over, trout are schooled up in hunting "wolf-packs," chasing shad right up into the shallows, so that is where the action is.....

Gun Show Doing Brisk Business This Weekend

Frogtown, CA...We stopped by the busy gun show that continues through today at the Calaveras County Fairground. We were not allowed to take photos inside the show but they were doing a brisk traffic. The 2nd amendment is alive, well and driving commerce in the foothills of California.
