Angels Camp, CA...The Ladies from Soroptimist International did another great job putting on the 2024 Frog Jump Youth Parade that is one of the kick events on opening day of the Calaveras County Fair & Frog Jump Jubilee every year. Not only does it showcase small town Americana with youth floats, dance groups & marching bands it also highlights our area's Mark Twain History and celebrating the Frog Jumping tale that not only put Twain's career on the map but is woven into our local lore. This year Tom & Becky returned from Hannibal, MO Tom's boyhood home to highlight our shared histories. We have 79 photos below from this morning and full parade video will be up soon as well. Angels Camp, CA...In compliance with the request of a friend of mine, who wrote me from the East, I called on good-natured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, and inquired after my friend's friend, Leonidas W. Smiley, as requested to do, and I hereunto append the result. I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W. Smiley is a myth; that my friend never knew such a personage; and that he only conjectured that, if I asked old Wheeler about him, it would remind him of his infamous Jim Smiley, and he would go to work and bore me nearly to death with some infernal reminiscence of him as long and tedious as it should be useless to me. If that was the design, it certainly succeeded.
