Washington, DC... To the men and women of the Department of Defense: I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that this morning, President Obama accepted my letter of resignation. I have agreed to continue to serve as Secretary of Defense until my successor is confirmed by the United States Senate. You should know I did not make this decision lightly. But after much discussion, the President and I agreed that now was the right time for new leadership here at the Pentagon.... |

Washington, DC...:My fellow Americans, tonight, I’d like to talk with you about immigration. For more than 200 years, our tradition of welcoming immigrants from around the world has given us a tremendous advantage over other nations. It’s kept us youthful, dynamic, and entrepreneurial. It has shaped our character as a people with limitless possibilities –- people not trapped by our past, but able to remake ourselves as we choose...

Suspension Lifted, Restricted Burning Hours |
Posted by: thepinetree on 11/17/2014 09:24 AM
|
San Andreas, CA....Following recent rain, CAL FIRE’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit has lifted the suspension of burning within State Responsibility Area (SRA) in Calaveras, Tuolumne, and the eastern portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the SRA effective Monday, November 17, 2014. While cooler temperatures have helped to diminish the threat of wildfire, residents are asked to use caution while conducting debris burns. Burn permits are required for all burning projects and must be completed between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Residents must follow burning requirements and maintain control of their fire at all times. Property owners may be held liable if a fire escapes their control and/or burns the property of a neighbor....

President Obama Condemns ISIS Beheading of Abdul-Rahman Kassig |
Posted by: thepinetree on 11/16/2014 10:15 PM
|
Washington, DC...Today we offer our prayers and condolences to the parents and family of Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known to us as Peter. We cannot begin to imagine their anguish at this painful time. Abdul-Rahman was taken from us in an act of pure evil by a terrorist group that the world rightly associates with inhumanity. Like Jim Foley and Steven Sotloff before him, his life and deeds stand in stark contrast to everything that ISIL represents. While ISIL revels in the slaughter of innocents, including Muslims, and is bent only on sowing death and destruction, Abdul-Rahman was a humanitarian who worked to save the lives of Syrians injured and dispossessed by the Syrian conflict. While ISIL exploits the tragedy in Syria to advance their own selfish aims, Abdul-Rahman was so moved by the anguish and suffering of Syrian civilians that he traveled to Lebanon to work in a hospital treating refugees. Later, he established an aid group, SERA, to provide assistance to Syrian refugees and displaced persons in Lebanon and Syria. These were the selfless acts of an individual who cared deeply about the plight of the Syrian people....

President Obama's Weekly Address: Open Enrollment Starts Today |
Posted by: thepinetree on 11/15/2014 09:24 AM
|
Washington, DC...Hi, everybody. Over the past year, more than 10 million Americans have gained the financial security and peace of mind that comes with health insurance. More than seven million people enrolled in affordable coverage by visiting HealthCare.gov, or going to the marketplace in their state. On average, they’re paying just $82 a month for coverage. For a lot of people, that’s less than a cell phone bill or a cable bill. Insurance companies can no longer deny you coverage just because you have a preexisting condition, and they now have to cover free preventive care like checkups and mammograms.
