Posted by: thepinetree on 03/04/2014 07:40 PM
Murphys, CA....County Supervisor Merita Callaway will host two open-to-everyone events, one in Arnold, the other in Murphys, to kick off her campaign for re-election in District 3. The first will be Wednesday, March 12, at the Milliaire Winery, 276 Main St. in Murphys, an area that was added to the district in 2011. The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. “I am looking forward to meeting and chatting with the voters in the Murphys/Douglas Flat area,” says Callaway. “Although I know many of them, having been involved in their various events over the years, this will be the first time they will have an opportunity to vote for me as their supervisor.”

President Obama's Weekly Address: Investing in Technology and Infrastructure to Create Jobs

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/01/2014 10:25 AM
Washington, DC...Hi everybody. In my State of the Union Address, I said that the best measure of opportunity is access to a good job. And after the worst recession of our lifetimes, our businesses have created eight and a half million new jobs in the last four years. But we need to do more to make America a magnet for good jobs for the future. And in this year of action, where Congress won’t do that, I will do whatever I can to expand opportunity for more Americans. This week, I took two actions to attract new jobs to America – jobs in American manufacturing, and jobs rebuilding America’s infrastructure...

National Income & Gross Domestic Product, Fourth Quarter and Annual 2013 Revised Downward

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/28/2014 06:41 PM
Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States -- increased at an annual rate of 2.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 (that is, from the third quarter to the fourth quarter), according to the "second" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 4.1 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 3.2 percent. With this second estimate for the fourth quarter, an increase in personal consumption expenditures (PCE) was smaller than previously estimated...

Statement by the President on Ukraine

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/28/2014 03:08 PM
Washington, DC...THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. Over the last several days, the United States has been responding to events as they unfold in Ukraine. Throughout this crisis, we have been very clear about one fundamental principle: The Ukrainian people deserve the opportunity to determine their own future. Together with our European allies, we have urged an end to the violence and encouraged Ukrainians to pursue a course in which they stabilize their country, forge a broad-based government and move to elections this spring....

Board Tackles Budget Issues

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/26/2014 08:46 PM
San Andreas, CA....Yesterday the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors received their mid year budget update. Needless to say they have quite a bit of digging to find revenue and savings to get things to balance out. Maintaining core and expected services while plugging and patching budget holes will be a reoccurring theme the next few months. Possible solutions suggested were a trip down paths that were not taken before or taken and proved less than rewarding the first or second time. The first place to look for savings will be the biggest, discretionary budget area which is staff. There seemed to be a consensus that a straight across the board budget cut may not be the best approach and some plan of induced retirements to coax the senior and more costly staffers to enter the next chapter of their lives is expected. Raising sales taxes, increasing the TOT tax and other approaches for increased revenue that have been rejected in the past will probably be freshened up and presented as 2014 solutions as well....
