Study: Investing On Forests Reduces Megafires And Saves Millions

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/10/2014 11:13 PM
San Francisco, CA...A new study released today finds investing in proactive forest management activities can save up to three times the cost of future fires, reduce high-severity fire by up to 75 percent, and bring added benefits for people, water, and wildlife. “Recent megafires in California and the West have destroyed lives and property, degraded water quality, damaged wildlife habitat, and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars,” said David Edelson, Sierra Nevada Project Director with The Nature Conservancy. “This study shows that, by investing now in Sierra forests, we can reduce risks, safeguard water quality, and recoup up to three times our initial investment while increasing the health and resilience of our forests.” ...

San Andreas, CA...Did you know that using a typical gas mower for one year can pollute as much as a car driven for 22,000 miles??? The Calaveras Air Pollution Control District (APCD) has initiated a grant program designed to assist the public in the replacement of existing gasoline or diesel-powered lawn mowers with cordless, zero-emission, electric lawn mowers. The APCD is offering a $145 rebate to any Calaveras County resident that replaces their current gasoline or diesel powered lawn mower with a zero-emission, cordless lawn mower....

Board of Equalization Returns More Than $27 Million in Cash Deposits

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/08/2014 03:02 PM
Sacramento, CA ... The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is returning approximately $27.6 million in cash deposits to more than 5,000 businesses in California and out-of-state, announced BOE Member George Runner today. The refunds come as a result of a Board decision to end automatic security deposit requirements for new businesses. Runner fought for this change, and his colleagues joined him in voting to end the policy in December 2013. “Thousands of business owners throughout California are receiving a welcome surprise in their mailbox,” said Runner. “Rather than a notice of a new tax, fee or audit, they’re getting a check from the State of California marked ‘SECURITY REFUND.’”The BOE began issuing checks this week, and will continue to do so for the next few weeks. With these latest numbers, the Board’s December 2013 vote has led to the release of more than $95.4 million in security deposits to taxpayers who have good reporting and payment histories. However, state law requires that the BOE continue to collect security deposits from its non-retail licensees who sell cigarettes and tobacco products, regardless of payment history...

President Touts Opportunity For All In Weekly Address

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/05/2014 10:47 AM
Washington, DC...Remarks of President Barack Obama. Weekly Address. The White House, April 5, 2014. Hi, everybody. Today, our economy is growing and our businesses are consistently generating new jobs. But decades-long trends still threaten the middle class. While those at the top are doing better than ever, too many Americans are working harder than ever, but feel like they can’t get ahead. That’s why the budget I sent Congress earlier this year is built on the idea of opportunity for all. It will grow the middle class and shrink the deficits we’ve already cut in half since I took office.

Sheriff Gary Kuntz Statement of Candidacy 2014: Why I’m Running

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/02/2014 10:02 PM
San Andreas, CA ... When I ran for Sheriff four years ago, law enforcement in Calaveras County faced some real challenges. I believed then that my 24-year career in Calaveras County law enforcement made me the best candidate to confront those challenges, and I asked for your vote. I sincerely appreciate the trust placed in me by the voters. Back then I pledged to fight for public safety. I pledged to put emphasis back on community policing. I pledged to help get the jail project back on track, and to restore trust in the Sheriff’s office. Today, working together, we have made real progress on all these fronts. Despite a widely dispersed County population and an ongoing budget crisis, with the support of the Board of Supervisors we were able to increase the number of deputies on patrol and decrease Average Response Times. The Average Response Time for all calls is now 36 ¾ minutes, down around 4 ½ minutes, or 11%. For emergency calls, the Average Response Time is now around 19 minutes, down 1 ¾ minutes, or 8%. Average Response Times are heading in the right direction. Overall, general crime prevention activity has greatly increased. In 2010, the year before I took office, the number of car stops was 1106. In 2013 car stops were up over 300% to 3116. Checks on commercial buildings and businesses are also up significantly, going from 21 in 2010 to 495 in 2013. Overall, violent crime is down about 17% since 2011.
