The Tuolumne Calaveras Unit Kicks Off The 2014 Fire Season Today

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/12/2014 04:37 PM
San Andreas, CA....As of today, May 12th, The Tuolumne Calaveras Unit or TCU is ready to roll. The Columbia Air Attack Base is fully staffed with Helicopter 404 and the contract on Air Tankers typically 81 & 82 starts today. The actual pieces of equipment can change but our area typically will have one helicopter and two tankers assigned for the duration of the season. The stations are fully staffed and the 2014 Fire Season is officially underway. It marks an early start and with the extremely dry conditions it would behoove all of us to be extra, extra, extra careful this year. Just think, last year all it took was one escaped campfire in August and now from Sonora to Yosemite is several shades darker and without trees that will take decades if ever to return to their previous state....

Complete Government Center Frog Jump Results

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/11/2014 10:46 AM
San Andreas, CA...We had already posted that Marcia Thompson & "Morph" had taken the top stop but we thought we would pass along some random video clips and over 140 photos of the event. Jockeying our local mascots seems easy enough until you try it. On Tuesday it seemed to take a woman's coaxing to get our green friends to leap. Some of the biggest guys in the crowd from the public works department barely got them to budge. There was one petite female whom shall remain nameless who not only scared her frog into movement but scared many in attendance as well. One has to assume from the harmless looking packaging on the outside that her bark must be worse than her bite.....

Weekly Address: The First Lady Marks Mother’s Day and Speaks Out on the Tragic Kidnapping in Nigeria

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/10/2014 11:09 AM
Washington, DC...Hello everyone, I’m Michelle Obama, and on this Mother’s Day weekend, I want to take a moment to honor all the mothers out there and wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. I also want to speak to you about an issue of great significance to me as a First Lady, and more importantly, as the mother of two young daughters. Like millions of people across the globe, my husband and I are outraged and heartbroken over the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls from their school dormitory in the middle of the night...

Cost-Saving Elections Bill First Defeated, Then Passed

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/09/2014 07:00 PM
Sacramento, CA...On Tuesday, a bill which would have allowed counties to decide how to conduct special elections for Congress and the Legislature failed passage in the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee. Assembly Bill 1873 (Gonzalez/Mullin) would have allowed an election to occur by absentee/mail-in-balloting if a county so desired. A number of requirements were placed into the bill to allow for a limited form of in-person voting. RCRC strongly supported this measure (and similar past legislation) as it would have saved counties money due to the requirement of poll workers and other in-person materials needed for voting...

USFS Proposing Directives on Ground Water, Water Quality Best Management Practices

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/09/2014 07:46 PM
Washington, DC...The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has proposed directives on groundwater protection and water quality best management practices on national forest lands that will update the way national forests manage their lands. This week, two separate proposals were released that establish new practices and procedures for monitoring, analyzing, and protecting water on forests and grasslands managed by the USFS. While neither proposal directly establishes mandates on rural communities, both will affect how future travel management plans and forest plan amendments are approached, and how people are allowed to use the forests. A greater focus on water quality and groundwater management has already been adopted in the updated National Forest Land Management Planning Rule (adopted in 2012), and this is one more step to tightening standards on USFS lands with respect to water management....

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/08/2014 04:02 PM
San Andreas, CA...District 5 and District 3 citizens, taxpayers and voters, another Government Code Section 54950, Brown Act Violation and 3.95 million
reasons not to re-elect Darren Spellman (D-5) and Merita Callaway (D-3). April 29, 2014 during the quarterly evening meeting, the proverbial rug was lifted and the dirt swept under by the Board of Supervisors. The California Land Conservation Act (Williamson Act) was on the agenda. An issue that was not properly dealt with in 2009 was part of the presentation....
