World Press Freedom Index 2018 Shows Hatred of Journalism Threatens Democracies
Posted by: thepinetree on 04/25/2018 05:39 PM
Paris, France...From Reporters without Borders..."The 2018 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), reflects growing animosity towards journalists. Hostility towards the media, openly encouraged by political leaders, and the efforts of authoritarian regimes to export their vision of journalism pose a threat to democracies. The climate of hatred is steadily more visible in the Index, which evaluates the level of press freedom in 180 countries each year. Hostility towards the media from political leaders is no longer limited to authoritarian countries such as Turkey (down two at 157th) and Egypt (161st), where “media-phobia” is now so pronounced that journalists are routinely accused of terrorism and all those who don’t offer loyalty are arbitrarily imprisoned.
State Dept. On Taliban Announcement of Spring Offensive

Washington, DC...We have seen the Taliban’s announcement of their spring offensive. The announcement affirms the Taliban’s responsibility for the insecurity that destroys the lives of thousands of Afghans each year. President Ghani recently extended an historic invitation for the Taliban to join a peace process, and there is no justification for the announcement of a new offensive. There is no need for a new “fighting season.” Still, the Taliban announced another campaign of senseless violence targeting the democratically elected and internationally recognized Afghan government and their fellow Afghans.

Arnold, CA...The following video highlights are another fine example of why it's time for new Leadership in the Assessor's Office. The commenters in these video clips are taxpayers that were finally able to get a group meeting with Leslie Davis who apparently felt that threats were the best way to quell her unhappy constituents. If you missed the Calaveras Enterprise Article: The headline read: “Property taxes increased due to computer glitch.” In the video below the Butte Fire Victims talk about that meeting. It is examples like this “why I am running for Assessor” You can see more issues and video at my website www.timm4assessor.com. BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "keenly" grasping the historic opportunity for informatization development in a bid to build the country's strength in cyberspace. Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chairman of the Central Military Commission, and head of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, made the instruction at a national conference on the work of cybersecurity and informatization held from Friday to Saturday.
An Excerpt..."Xi urged improving the governance capacity in cyberspace and developing a governing network led by the Party. Internet media should spread positive information, uphold the correct political direction, and guide public opinion and values towards the right direction. Internet service providers should take responsibility to prevent cyberspace from degrading into a platform full of harmful, false, and provocative information. Efforts should be made to enhance self-discipline of the internet industry, and mobilize all sectors to take an active part in cyberspace governance."
