Posted by: thepinetree on 01/14/2014 08:12 PM

San Andreas, CA...In a breach of normal tradition, Supervisor Darren Spellman, the 2013 Vice-Chair was passed over for ascension to the 2014 Board Chair position. Edson, Wright & Ponte elevated Supervisor Ponte to the position as the 2014 Board Chair, while Supervisor Merita Callaway voted against and Spellman abstained. Today's meeting had some awkward moments before the eventual outcome. With this drama filled start, and 2014 being an election year for two seats on the board the Board Chambers will no doubt become the center of the county's attention once again as the year progresses. Throw in budget problems and odds are some of the 2014 meetings may be local, political theater at a very intense level. The games have commenced...

Washington, DC...Hi, everybody. Yesterday, we learned that in 2013, our businesses created 2.2 million new jobs – including 87,000 last month. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since October 2008. And across our broader economy, there are signs of progress. Our manufacturing and housing sectors are rebounding. Our energy, technology, and auto sectors are booming. Thanks in part to the reforms in the Affordable Care Act, health care costs now eat up less of our economy – over the past four years, costs have grown at the slowest rate on record. And since I took office, we’ve cut our deficits by more than half...

Sacramento, CA...As California’s dry weather pushes into the new year, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) today announced that its first snow survey of the winter found more bare ground than snow. Manual and electronic readings record the snowpack’s statewide water content at about 20 percent of average for this time of year. That is a mere 7 percent of the average April 1 measurement, when the snowpack normally is at its peak before melting into streams and reservoirs to provide a third of the water used by California’s cities and farms....
