State Department Issues Summer Europe Travel Alert...Time For Stay-cations?

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/31/2016 01:19 PM
Washington, DC...As part of the State Department’s continuous efforts to provide Americans travelling abroad with information about relevant events, we are alerting U.S. citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation. The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events. This Travel Alert expires August 31, 2016.

President Obama's Weekly Address: Weekly Address: Remembering Those Who Have Fallen

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/28/2016 02:03 PM
Washington, DC...Hi, everybody. Right now, there are American troops serving in harm’s way and standing sentry around the world. There are veterans who’ve served honorably in times of war and peace, and often came home bearing the invisible and visible wounds of war. They may not speak the loudest about their patriotism – they let their actions do that. And the right time to think of these men and women, and thank them for their service and sacrifice, is every day of the year. Memorial Day, which we’ll observe Monday, is different. It’s the day we remember those who never made it home; those who never had the chance to take off the uniform and be honored as a veteran. It’s the day we stop to reflect with gratitude on the sacrifice of generations who made us more prosperous and free, and to think of the loved ones they left behind.

Tree Mortality Delays Some Campground Openings

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/25/2016 08:22 AM
Sonora, CA...With more than 40 million trees dead across California and even more dying, the face of recreation opportunities on national forest lands is changing. Four years of extreme drought and bark beetle infestation, combined with ongoing work to mitigate public safety hazards means some Stanislaus National Forest (STF) sites will not be open to the public for Memorial Day weekend and some may not open this summer.

Silver Springs, MD...Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration took a major step in making sure consumers have updated nutritional information for most packaged foods sold in the United States, that will help people make informed decisions about the foods they eat and feed their families. “I am thrilled that the FDA has finalized a new and improved Nutrition Facts label that will be on food products nationwide,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “This is going to make a real difference in providing families across the country the information they need to make healthy choices.”
