Calaveras Adopting Voter’s Choice Act

San Andreas, CA...The Registrar of Voters has opted to adopt the Voter’s Choice Act Election Model. The draft Election Administration Plan (EAP) was released on August 9th. The EAP outlines the county’s proposal on how to facilitate an All-Mail/Vote Center election and the various changes in policy and procedure that accompany the transition. Consultations and informational meetings were held in August related to the Voter’s Choice Act. A public comment period for the first draft of the EAP ends September 12, 2019, and a public hearing to consider the proposed EAP will be held on September 13, 2019, at 10:00 a.m.

Governor Newsom Signs Legislation Including Bill Eliminating Requirement for Citizens to Help Law Enforcement

Sacramento, CA...Lawmakers on Thursday sent Gov. Gavin Newsom a measure eliminating the California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872. The nearly 150-year-old law makes it a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $1,000 for failing to help police make an arrest or catch a fleeing suspect.

Conception Dive Boat Tragedy Update

Santa Barbara, CA...At approximately 3:30 a.m., Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard and partnering agencies responded to a vessel fire off the north shore of Santa Cruz Island near Platt’s Harbor in Santa Barbara County. Emergency responders encountered “Conception”, a 75-foot commercial diving boat based out of the Santa Barbara Harbor, fully engulfed in fire. The vessel sank to the ocean floor at approximately 7:20 a.m.

33 Feared Dead in Diving Boat Fire Near Santa Cruz Island

Santa Barbara, CA...Coast Guard and partner agencies are responding to a vessel fire near Santa Cruz Island Monday. At approximately 3:15 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders overheard a mayday call via channel 16 of an engulfed 75-foot commercial diving vessel with 38 people aboard. Crews from the Coast Guard, Santa Barbara Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department and Vessel Assist responded. The fire department crews were fighting the fire when the vessel sank 20 yards off shore in 64 feet of water.

Sonora, CA...The Sonora Opera Hall was filled to overflowing on Thursday evening as hundreds of local homeowners overpacked the venue so that the fire marshals had to ask some to leave. Speaking of fire….many attendees were close to spontaneous combustion at the lack of insurance options and exorbitant pricing of the few options they do have.
