Hovey Holds Free Art Show June 20

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/03/2015 04:59 PM
Murphys, June 3, 2014 – Hovey Winery Tasting Room, 350 Main St., Murphys, will feature a number of local artists at its annual Art on the Lawn from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20. Entry is free and wine by the glass or bottle will be available for sale. “Traditionally we’ve held an art show during Calaveras Winegrape Alliance’s Passport Weekend and took a year off when the event changed to CWA Behind the Bottle,” said Jan Hovey, “but we’re really excited to bring it back. Guests can meander through the garden visiting artists one-on-one, enjoy their talents, and hopefully take a piece or two home to savor.”

Twisted Folk Concert Series Presents the Leftover Cuties (Reminder Tonight)

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/30/2015 09:39 AM
Vallecito, CA...Twisted Oak Winery is pleased to announce the first concert of our 2015 Twisted Folk Concert Series – featuring The Leftover Cuties! “We’re thrilled to be able to kick off our 2015 Summer Concert Series with such an interesting group of musicians as the Leftover Cuties,” said winery co-owner Jeff Stai. “The Leftover Cuties blend 1930s acoustic jazz, a dash of Dixieland, and a modern pop vibe into sort of a retro mix of awesomeness. I know that probably makes no sense, you’ll just have to come to the show to see what I mean.”

Grover Anderson Oct. 23, 1933 – May 21, 2015

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/29/2015 12:52 PM
Murphys, CA...Grover Anderson Oct. 23, 1933 – May 21, 2015. Born in Ceres, CA, the fourth and last child of James G. and Hattie Anderson, Grover died peacefully at home with his family in Murphys. In 1947, Grover’s father and eldest brother Leonard purchased the Dorrington Hotel and Camp Connell store and surrounding property. Grover was enrolled at Bret Harte High – a musically gifted student who also excelled academically and athletically. He loved playing football as a Bullfrog. He was a member of the Angels Camp Miners Band and is sweetly remembered picking up his clarinet or trumpet and playing along with music from the stereo at home. Once, when entreated by his wife to be quiet because their firstborn, Jack, was sleeping, he replied “he’d better get used to it!” We all did, and when he could no longer hold the instrument to his lips, we missed the perfectly pitched melodies that gave us an idea of the soul inside the man.
