Murphys, CA...Years ago, I worked for Ironstone Vineyards. The following story is one of my favorite memories of working in the Sierra Mountain region. It all happened in Calaveras County. It was a two and a half year gig. I intuitively knew going into it that it would only last two years. It managed to squeak it out to two and a half years, with the last six months really squeaking along… except for that howling wolf night. Perhaps that’s why I had to stay for the last six months, to live and tell this memorable story....

January is National Mentoring Month: Be Someone Who Matters to Someone Who Matters

Angels Camp, CA...his January marks the 13th annual National Mentoring Month, a campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring programs and connecting more of our community’s young people with caring adults. Here in Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Office of Education administers two youth mentoring programs: the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, which supports 25-30 matches at a time between children and caring adult friends; and the FNL Mentoring Program, which connects up to 30 middle school students with high school mentors each year. Both the Calaveras County Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors annually recognize National Mentoring Month and express their gratitude for our community’s volunteer mentors....

Public Health Department Seeing Increase in Seasonal Flu. Flu Shots Available

San Andreas, CA...Seasonal flu [influenza] activity has been increasing dramatically across the United States and areas of California over the past week. The cases have included young and middle aged adults as well as those at high risk of serious illness and death. To date, four flu linked deaths have been reported in California in persons less than 64 years of age. Dean Kelaita, MD, County Health Officer, stated, “No flu deaths have been reported in Calaveras County to date.” ....

Under the egis of the Murphys Business Association (MBA), the signature event will be held Saturday, March 15, the Saturday closest to St. Patrick’s Day. “This event, which means so much to our community, would not be possible without the hard work by a number of people who give of their time for many weeks to make sure Irish Day continues to be one of the most popular happening in the Mother Lode,” says MBA president Jim Heryford....
