California Counties Urge National Forest Management Reform

Sacramento, CA....The Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) and the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) announced their joint support for the enactment of legislation to better manage California’s national forests. “The growing bipartisan recognition that Congress must address proper management of our nation’s forests illustrates the need to enact healthy forest legislation in 2014,” said Kevin Cann, RCRC Chair and Mariposa County Supervisor. “The recent wildfires on U.S. Forest Service lands clearly demonstrate the results if Congress fails to act.”

Pinecrest, CA...Experimental Forest VDTS Prescribed Burn, Summit Ranger District. The prescribed fire is located south of Pinecrest and adjacent to Forest Service Roads 4N26 (Crabtree Road), 4N68Y (Sheering Creek Road), and 4N10. Locations are Township 4N Range 18E Sections 21, 22, 27, 28. Ignition of the Experimental Forest VDTS Prescribed Burn will commence in late October 2013 or early November 2013. Burn days will vary slightly and are contingent on weather, fuel moisture, and air quality. All burning is monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines and closely coordinated with local county air quality control districts...

Long Barn, CA...Hulls Meadow Hand Piles, Mi-Wok Ranger District. This project is located within and adjacent to Hulls Meadow on the Mi-Wok Ranger District in Tuolumne County, approxamently 3.5 miles sowtheast of Long Barn, CA. Specific location; Township 3 north, Range 17 east, Section 35. Ignition will begin during the last week of October and should last several weeks. Burning is based on weather and air quality conditions. All burning is monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines. Burning is also closely coordinated with local county air quality control districts. Approximately 60 acres of piled material are to be treated with low-intensity fire. Burning would be limited to 2-5 acres per day Accomplishments will be dependent on air quality considerations, weather and resource availability...

Rim Fire Ranchers Relief Benefit November 23rd

Sonora, CA...For decades, the natural water sources and abundant vegetation of Stanislaus National Forest have served as ideal grazing land for grass-fed cattle in the summer months. About 4,000 cows were ranging there when the Rim Fire ignited August 17. After burning 257,314 acres the Rim Fire is now fully contained over two months after it was ignited. There were eleven homes, three commercial properties and 98 outbuilding destroyed in the flames. Miles of fencing destroyed and many of the Ranchers have over 100 head each confirmed dead and even more believed to be dead, and the near future of grazing in the forest up in the air, the cattle industry is another victim of the massive blaze on the west edge of Yosemite.
