Freedom From Smoking for the Holidays

The course begins on Monday, October 14, and runs through November 25, meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Monday and one Wednesday at the Live Well Be Well Center.

Sonora, CA...Jon Cavaiani (born August 2, 1943) is a retired United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military’s highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War. Sergeant Major Jon Cavaiani is fighting for his life. Jon has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodyplastic syndrome), a life threatening blood disorder. Over the last few months, Jon has received medical consultations, blood transfusions, and chemotherapy form San Francisco Veterans Hospital—Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Sonora Hospital. Currently, Jon is waiting for admission to Stanford for a bone marrow transplant and other critical treatments....

Two New Corrections Officers Sworn In

San Andreas, CA...On October 8, 2013, Sheriff Gary Kuntz swore in two Corrections Officers and newest members of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. Corrections Officer Justin Teague is originally from Tuolumne and a former air craft mechanic and U.S. Navy veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Corrections Officer Bret Belshe is originally from Valley Springs and previously worked as a Captain with the Central Calaveras Fire and Rescue Protection District where he served for 5 years...

Ebbetts and Sonora Passes Now Open

Bear Valley, CA...Caltrans is now showing both Hwy 4 and 108 passes open again after the latest early winter storm passed through. Please be careful for some slippery and adverse conditions. We don't wont to have to write about you taking an unplanned exit on Cadillac Curve. Those 1,500 ft drops can really set your day back....

BAER Tracks – Rim Fire BAER Accomplishment Report

Groveland, CA...The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) implementation team received funding to begin emergency stabilization. Emergency response actions include: hazard tree mitigation; improve and stormproof the roads to restore drainage; repair and construct rolling dips (drivable dip that removes water off the road); stabilize and repair trails; install public warning signs, gates, and barricades for public safety; and protect cultural and natural resources. While these treatments will help to reduce post-fire effects, it must be recognized that not all effects can be mitigated, and potential threats to life and property remain during runoff events...

Medical Center Gala Raises Money for Cancer Patients

Sonora, CA...The 13th annual Joie de Vie Gala, a benefit for the Cancer Patient Support Fund of Sonora Regional Medical Center, will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. The Gala will include a dinner, entertainment and a silent auction featuring items such as art, dinners, services and vacation opportunities. Orthopedist John Nelligan, MD will provide the evening’s musical entertainment....
