All Aboard! Railtown 1897 Offers Excursion Train Rides & Live Music Over Labor Day Weekend

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/29/2014 10:57 AM
Jamestown, Ca. – To celebrate the holiday in rail-related style, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) in Jamestown will offer popular excursion train rides all three days of the upcoming Labor Day weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, rides behind the famous “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3 are available; then on Labor Day Monday, vintage diesel train rides are available for interested Park visitors. As another special treat, singer/banjoist James Nelson of the Black Irish Band will entertain guests all three days while performing live on the platform under the tulip tree. Tapping into America’s love affair with trains and westerns, the iconic Sierra No. 3 became known as the “Movie Star Locomotive” after starring in more than 100 Hollywood movies and television productions alongside world-famous celebrities beginning in the early 1900s. In addition to its impressive Hollywood film credentials, Sierra No. 3 is one of the oldest operating steam locomotives in the United States and Railtown 1897 SHP in Jamestown is home to one of just two remaining, fully intact and still functioning steam-era shortline railroad roundhouse complexes in the United States...

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/29/2014 03:31 PM
Yosemite, CA....Last evening on the El Portal fire the night shift reported active fire until approximately 1:30 A.M. after which conditions settled down. Today’s areas of concern are concentrated on the northern portion of the fire as the fireline bumps into the burn perimeter of the 2009 Big Meadow Fire. Fire crews and aviation assets will continue to combat the fire which is seated in very steep, remote terrain. Vegetation in this area and throughout the state remains in critical, historic drought conditions. The Dark Hole fire, also being managed by CIIMT 5 remains at just over 500 acres as a smoldering, creeping fire in the understory. As threats from this fire are minimal fire resources have been largely concentrated on the El Portal...

Yosemite July Lightning Fire Update #1

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/25/2014 12:17 AM
Yosemite, Ca...Since July 14, Yosemite National Park has experienced over 3,000 lightning strikes with more than 21 fire starts. Multiple thunderstorms, accompanied by rain, have put out or temporarily slowed activity and growth. Most fires are between 8000’ and 9000’ elevation. They are small, creeping and smoldering surface fires or single logs less than 1/10 of an acre and are showing minimal activity. Of 1,004 fires above 8,000’ since 1930, 941 never got to be 10 acres. Most of these fires have few values at risk an pose little threat to people or park infrastructure. As the weather warms and fuels dry out it is likely other fires will be found. All fires are being monitored by fire crews. Fire crews will utilize natural barriers of granite, streams or open ground to manage fires. The Fire Management Plan allows the park to manage any fire outside of the suppression unit....
