Cross Country Changes From Crabtree to Gooseberry Trail Because of Snow Harvesting

Pinecrest, CA...The Stanislaus National Forest (NF) is closing the Crabtree cross country ski area and is opening a similarly groomed trail on the Summit Ranger District, Gooseberry Trail today. In an agreement with Dodge Ridge Ski Area, Crabtree Cross Country Ski Area (located just southwest) will be closed and used to harvest snow temporarily for recreational use at Dodge Ridge....

Yosemite, CA...Yosemite National Park announces the release of the Merced Wild and Scenic River Final Comprehensive Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). “This plan will protect the Merced River and its outstandingly remarkable values into perpetuity and provide quality visitor facilities and access,” stated Don Neubacher, Yosemite Superintendent. “The planning process has been a monumental effort and we appreciate all the public input we have received. We now want to move forward with actions in the Plan that are critical to the preservation and enjoyment of this iconic national treasure.”

Sonora, CA...12 February 2014, at approx. 10:07 am, officers were dispatched to the area of Mono Way, across from the Timer Hills Shopping Center, regarding an injury accident. When officers arrived, they observed that a 2001 Toyota pick-up had left the north side of the roadway, and struck the rear of a City of Sonora backhoe, that was parked along the north edge of the roadway where City Public Works members were working. SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments. Nancy Ward, 58, of Sacramento, has been appointed chief deputy director at the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Ward has served in multiple positions for Region IX of the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency since 2000, including regional administrator and director of the Response and Recovery Division. Ward was chief of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Disaster Assistance Division from 1993 to 2000 and a staff services manager at the California Department of Social Services from 1989 to 1993. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $165,000. Ward is registered without party preference....

CAL FIRE Increases Firefighter Staffing in Central Valley & Sierra

Sacramento, CA...Despite recent rain, California has not received enough rainfall to make up for this winter’s dry weather pattern and the third dry year in a row. As a result, continued drought conditions and wildfires have required CAL FIRE to hire several dozen seasonal firefighters earlier than normal across the Central Valley and Central Sierra. “The recent rainfall is not enough for us to let our guard down,” said Chief Dale Hutchinson, CAL FIRE Southern Region Chief. “Though the rain is great in the short term, even if it rained straight for several months, we wouldn’t catch up to the amount of rainfall we need.” The additional seasonal firefighter hiring includes 15 firefighters in CAL FIRE's Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, 14 in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, and 12 in the Fresno-Kings Unit. The additional firefighters come just one week after nearly two dozen seasonal firefighters were hired in Tulare County....

Open House Slated for Updates on Rim Fire Recovery Project

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest will host an open house on Thursday, February 13 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Stanislaus National Forest’s Conference Room at 19777 Greenley Road, Sonora (across the street from the Tuolumne County Library). “We want to continue to provide information to the public regarding the progress on the proposed Rim Fire Recovery Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This will be another great opportunity for the public to see what the Forest is proposing during this initial phase of recovery within the burn,” Maria Benech, Rim Fire Recovery EIS ID Team Leader said. Several dozen members of the local community attended three previous Open Houses held in December which provided an overview of the initial proposed actions and poster presentations by various resource experts. This Open House is intended to share information regarding new alternatives developed based on public involvement and collaborative efforts....
