Hospice of the Sierra Offering Orientation and Training for Prospective Volunteers

Sonora, CA...Sonora Regional Medical Center’s Hospice of the Sierra is looking for volunteers in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties and is offering orientation and training for those who are interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. The orientation session will occur on April 9, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hospice of the Sierra’s Sonora office located at 20100 Cedar Road North.

New Structure Will Restore Access To Yosemite

Mariposa, CA...Caltrans and its partners began the first phase of a $133 million project to create a unique protective structure to protect the roadway from rockslides and restore State Route 140 between Mariposa and El Portal, and provide a safe, direct route to enter Yosemite National Park. “The new structure will offer a unique, sustainable solution to avoid future closures,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “This is important because SR-140 is a lifeline for local residents and this project will provide a safe and efficient transportation system to enhance Mariposa County’s economy and livability for years to come.”

Groveland, CA...The Stanislaus National Forest is rising phoenix-like from the blackened forest left by the Rim Fire that blazed through the Sierras in August of 2013. Left with a burn scar that is one-third larger than New York City, a reforestation team is diligently working to bring forth a new forest. Since the fire, much has been done in the way of making the forest safe for public travel and recreation along main travel routes. Snags and fire-damaged trees are a safety hazard to humans and wildlife; they also create a tremendous fuel load on the ground (biomass) as they fall. This fuel can feed future fires, which can be severely damaging to the soil. Jack-strawed trees can also make it difficult for tree seedlings to gain a foothold...

Vehicle vs Pedestrian Accident After Celtic Faire Turns Fatal For Stockton Woman

Sonora, CA... The Sonora Police Department was contacted by the Stanislaus County Coroners Officer and advised that the female pedestrian in the vehicle vs. pedestrian accident on Stockton Road, on Saturday, 7 March 2015, has passed away as the result of the injuries she sustained from the incident. The female pedestrian has been identified as Kathy Warner, 61 of Stockton. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Twain Harte Woman Celea Janka Passes Away From Injuries Sustained In Friday Collision

Twain Harte, CA...On 3/13/15, at approximately 1625 hours a 90 year old Twain Harte man was driving his 2004 Audi A4 eastbound on Hwy 108 and was stopped in the left turn lane onto Twain Harte Drive East. At the same time a 44 year old Pinecrest, CA. woman was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on Hwy 108 at approximately 45 miles per hour approaching the Audi's location. For an unknown reason the driver of the Audi decided to make a left hand turn, at slow speed, onto Twain Harte Drive East directly a short distance ahead of her vehicle, she applied her brakes, but was unable to stop her Suburban in time...
