Modesto, CA...Former Tuolumne County Sheriff's Deputy Killed by suspected drunk driver last night. From TCSO.."The Modesto Police Department suffered a tragic loss last night when Sergeant Mike Pershall was killed in a vehicle versus bicycle accident. Mike Pershall has been with MPD since 2012, previously with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office from 2008 to 2012. Mike was a good Cop, a good friend and this is truly a tragic loss. We were blessed to have Mike for the time he was with our Office. We are so very sorry for Mike’s wife, children, family and MPD. Our sincerest condolences, our hearts are heavy today."

Railtown 1897 Calls Out for Volunteers to Support THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride Experience This Holiday Season |

Jamestown, CA..Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) is looking for interested volunteers to help support THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride experiences that will be available this holiday season. Interested adult volunteers are encouraged to attend one of the Volunteer Open House events that are scheduled on two upcoming Saturdays – September 23 & 30, 2017 – from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Park. While no previous experience is necessary and training will be provided, volunteers will conduct a number of festive activities that include welcoming greeters, line monitoring, cocoa pouring and serving, hospitality support, story narrating and more (depending on their skills and areas of interest). Complimentary refreshments will be provided at the Volunteer Open House events and potential volunteers will have the opportunity to talk to the leads of the program who can answer questions and provide additional insight.

South Fork Fire Update, 3,820 Acres, 17% Contained, Wawona Evacuation Orders Remain in Effect |

Wawona, CA...Crews made significant progress yesterday building and strengthening line on the west side of the fire above Wawona. Contingency lines were also established to the northwest leading to Turner Ridge. Firefighters now have access to the South Fork and have been inserted to extinguish spot fires that have been occurring the past few days. Today crews will continue burning operations above Wawona from the fireline to the S. Fork of the Merced. Mandatory evacuations will remain in place in Wawona for the area east of Highway 41 on Forest Dr. and Chilnualna Falls Rd. until further notice.

Two Suspected Drug Dealers Arrested Over the Weekend. |

Sonora, CA...Two suspected drug dealers were booked into the Tuolumne County Jail over the weekend. Early Sunday morning, Cpl Donaldson stopped a green Nissan Xterra SUV for expired registration on Highway 108 near Washington Street in Sonora. 35-year-old Tiffany Keeslar of Modesto was driving the SUV with a suspended driver's license. 39-year-old passenger Bridget Brennan of Sonora had a misdemeanor warrant for her arrest and a glass methamphetamine smoking pipe was found on her person.

Placerville, CA...We are currently holding Open Enrollment for our 4-H Youth Development Programs in Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne counties. Enrollment is available all year but October 15, 2017 is the deadline to register for returning members that want to show at county fair. New members must be enrolled by December 1st, 2017 to be eligible for fair. 4-H Youth Development helps young people reach their full potential as competent, confident and caring leaders of character who are connected to others and contribute to their communities.

Freedom From Smoking Class Begins in August |

Sonora, CA...Adventist Health Sonora is once again offering the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® course beginning August 29. Classes will meet each Tuesday and one Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for seven weeks at Pulmonary Rehabilitation, located at 19747 Greenley Road in Sonora. Freedom From Smoking provides a supportive group environment where adults work through the quitting process together with guidance from a respiratory therapist. According to the American Lung Association, “Research has proven that the more time a smoker spends in a supportive situation, the more likely he or she is to succeed. People who use [Freedom From Smoking] are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who quit on their own.”

Paving on SR-49 from Chicken Ranch Road to Eastbound SR-108 |

Tuolumne County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on northbound and southbound State Route 49 (SR-49) from Chicken Ranch Road to eastbound SR-108 for paving operations. Work will begin Sunday, August 20, 2017, through Friday, August 25, 2017, from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Motorists should expect 10 minute delays. Alternate routes should be taken whenever possible.

Tuolumne County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the northbound connector ramp from State Route 108 (SR-108) to SR-49 for pavement work. This closure will occur approximately 2 miles west of Lime Kiln Road/South Washington Street. Crews will be working Sunday, August 20, 2017, through Friday, August 25, 2017, from 8:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Motorists should expect 20 minute delays.
