Sonora, CA...High summer temperatures and atmospheric conditions are causing thunderstorms to develop in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Forest firefighters are patrolling the forest looking for lightning-caused fires. While many strikes occur on the eastern Sierra slopes, the Forest is recording a large number of strikes on the west side of the Crest. “We’ve had significant strikes throughout each corridor, and Thursday is predicted to be the heaviest lightning event for the west side of the Crest,” said Dave Updike, Stanislaus National Forest’s Fire Chief. “We will fly recon flights for the next few days, looking to see if there are any new fire starts.”

Pinecrest, CA...On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at approximately 1:25 am, 23 year old Sonora resident, Felicia M. Rodriguez, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on State Route 108 west of Bald Mountain Heliport Rd (Little Sweden) at a high rate of speed in the #2 (right) lane. Rodriguez was unable to negotiate a left hand curve in the roadway as she allowed her vehicle to travel into the #1 (left) lane and over corrected turning the vehicle back to the right. Rodriguez lost control of the vehicle traveling back into the #2 lane. The vehicle then traveled across both westbound lanes and onto the center median. Washington, DC...Mr. Speaker: I want to begin by saluting the more than 5,000 firefighters from 40 cooperating agencies that assembled under the coordination of CAlFIRE to battle the Detwiler fire that threatened Yosemite Valley and its gateway communities. I spent Saturday at the command centers in Mariposa and Merced Counties and what I saw is what I have seen time and again at so many fires we are having these days in the Sierra: cool, calm professionalism, selflessness and devotion to duty.

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/30/2017 10:04 AM
Greeley Hill, CA...As the containment numbers continue to climb and resources are starting to be released we thought we would pass along last night's heat maps. This will dictate today's workload for helicopters and boots on the ground as they cool off the warm spots on the map. Unfortunately is seems the hot spots are a bit more tightly packed in the Greeley Hill area. The official update from last night..."Last night more containment efforts were made. Further repopulation efforts will continue under the repoplulation plan. Sunny and dry weather continue today. The fire is seeing better humidity recoveries at night. We ask the public to exercise caution and remember that, “One Less Spark-One Less Wildfire”."
