Tuolumne County Regional Fire Academy Graduates Eight New Firefighters

Sonora, CA...The Tuolumne County Fire Department is proud to announce the graduation of five TCFD Volunteer Firefighters, one Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire District Volunteer Firefighter and two TCFD Fire Explorers from the Tuolumne County Regional Volunteer Firefighter Academy. County Fire held a small graduation ceremony on Friday night to recognize the dedication, sacrifice and hard work these eight individuals endured over the last five months. Attendees of the ceremony included the family and friends of the graduates, Supervisor Randy Hanvelt (District 2) and CAL FIRE/TCFD staff.
Karen Lynn Collins, 51 From Groveland Passed Away in Tragic Collision On Mono Way

Sonora, CA...On June 14, 2017 at approximately 2:45 pm, a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 72 year old William Charles Whitehouse, from Twain Harte, was traveling eastbound on Mono Way, west of El Ray Lane directly to the rear of a 2006 Honda Civic being driven by 51 year old Groveland resident, Karen Lynn Collins. A 2003 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Rolland Anthony Demartini was traveling westbound on Mono Way east of El Ray Lane. Mrs. Collins slowed her vehicle in preparation to make a left turn northbound onto El Ray Lane, Mr. Whitehouse failed to slow his vehicle in a timely manner to the rear of Mrs. Collins’ vehicle. Subsequently, the front of Mr. Whitehouse’s vehicle collided with the rear of Mrs. Collins’ vehicle. This collision caused Mrs. Collins’ vehicle to be pushed into the westbound lane, directly into the path of Mr. Demartini’s vehicle. The front of Mrs. Collins vehicle collided with the left front of Mr. Demartini’s vehicle. Mrs. Collins was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Multiple Agencies Assist In Successful Arrest Of Trio In Big Rig Theft

Sonora, CA...The Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force on 06/13/17, was in the area of West Main St in Turlock when they located a 2012 Kenworth Big Rig that had been reported stolen to Oakdale PD. StanCATT conducted surveillance on the vehicle. The vehicle became mobile and started to drive through Stanislaus County. While conducting surveillance on the big rig, StanCATT was able to positively identify the driver as James Sass, 36, from Turlock. James Sass was known to have a Felony No Bail warrant issued out of Stanislaus County for a prior auto theft case.

El Portal Road in Yosemite National Park Remains Closed Highway 140 closed at Parkline at least through the weekend

Yosemite, CA...The El Portal Road and Arch Rock Entrance into Yosemite National Park remain closed due to a rockslide that occurred yesterday around Noon. Yosemite National Park staff are assessing the area and the road will remain closed at least through the weekend of June 17-18, 2017. After the assessment is complete, crews will begin to remove rock debris and repair the road to make it safe for visitors to travel on. There is no estimate for when the road will reopen.
Sonora Pass/SR-108 Now Open For The Summer...Not Yet For Ebbetts

Tuolumne County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has removed the winter snow, cleared the debris and made the necessary repairs to open State Route 108 (SR-108) over Sonora Pass at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. The diligent work of Caltrans crews enabled the opening of the pass for motorists who utilize this route. Yosemite, CA...Yesterday evening at 1900 hours Yosemite Fire and Aviation started ignition on the Soupbowl Prescribed Fire Unit between the South Entrance and the community of Wawona. At 2100 hours operations were shut down due to mixed rain and snow. Burn conditions were good leading up to the weather event. 5-10 acres of blackline was complete along the Wawona Road (State Hwy 41 Extension).
