CAL-FIRE Cancels Greeley Hill Town Hall Because of Fire Activity on North Flank of Detwiler Fire

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/24/2017 09:23 PM
Greeley Hill, CA...The Detwiler fire is now at 78,900 acres and 65% contained While the containment number rising is a good thing almost all of the burned acreage jumps have been on the northern edges of the fire. Even as most of the news from the Detwiler Fire is good there have been some troubling developments on the northern end of the fire. If you look at the map below all of the dark edges of the map are on the southern flank closer to Mariposa. The red or still burning sections of the fire are mostly on the northern end of the fire. What has concerned us from the start of watching this fire is that northern edge. For those of you familiar with that area there is a 500ft to 1,t00 elevation change in a very short distance. The elevation of Coulterville is 1,699 and the elevation of Greeley Hill is 3,153. In general the Rim Fire burned predominately on the eastern side of Hwy 120 on it's northern flanks. So there is lots of heavy fuel and lots of uphill runs the fire can make in the areas closer to us. They will get this fire but she still unfortunately has more destructive life in her yet. Tragically this area is at least physiologically in the Rim Fire burn scar shadow. For those affected the scars from the Rim Fire are being opened up again South of Groveland.

Click above for the detailed Incident Action Plan which may be of deep interest to those on the northern edge of this fire still in search of fuel.

Detwiler Fire Morning Update, 75,200 acres, 30% Contained, 60 Residences Destroyed, 1 Commercial Building Lost, 63 Minor Structures Burned, 13 Residences Damaged and 7 Minor Structures Damaged, 4,489 Personnel Working Fire.

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/22/2017 08:55 AM
Mariposa, CA...The 4,489 strong fire fighting army that has been assembled to battle this fire now has the upper hand and are working hard on putting the Detwiler in the history books. There is a long, long way to go but this does seem like an apt place to insert a Churchill quote..."Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Winston Churchill Ok, now for the latest..Last night firefighters continued to construct and reinforce fire lines. Today conditions will start to heat up. High temperatures are expected to range from 96-102 degrees with minimum humidities from 12-16 percent. Fire activity is expected to be moderate with isolated tree torching. The damage inspection team is now approximately 98 percent complete with their assessment of damaged and destroyed buildings. We ask the public to exercise caution and remember that, “One Less Spark-One Less Wildfire”.

Click Above for the IAP or Incident Action Plan for today. We hadn't included these before now as these tend to be very conservative and rightly so but can be upsetting to those whose property or homes fall inside the areas not seen as immediately defensible. As an example for the Butte Fire some of the IAPs had "keeping the fire out of the Stanislaus Drainage as a goal. Which by default meant using Hwy 4 as a defense line if necessary. Those whose homes ended up being south of the burn area but north of Hwy 4 are very glad it never had to come to that. Now that they have the upper hand on the Detwiler the additional details can be fascinating without causing anxiety to those near the fire.
