Mountain Ranch, CA...William Warren Schmiett Born Nov. 24, 1952—died Dec. 11, 2018. Bill made 66 trips around the sun. A native Californian, Bill was born in Griffith Park in Los Angeles County, and later moved as a young child with his family to Sunnyvale, CA. Bill spent most of his adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Calaveras County. He and his wife moved full time to Mountain Ranch in 2001, were burnt out during the Butte Fire in 2015, and relocated to Mokelumne Hill in 2017. After travelling to Mexico over several years, Bill became enamored with the Mexican people and culture, as well as becoming fluent in Spanish. Bill was creating a lovely retreat home for himself and his wife in El Pescadero, BCS Mexico.

CCWD Hires Michael Minkler as New General Manager |

San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Water District Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Michael Minkler has been hired as the new general manager of the District. The Board unanimously approved his contract on Wednesday January 9, and his first day on the job will be February 19. In November, CCWD’s general manager of four years, Dave Eggerton, took a new job as the Executive Director of the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA). Since Eggerton’s departure, the CCWD Board named Jeffrey Meyer as interim general manager.

Mountain Ranch, CA...The following was written by Doug Schmiett the brother of Bill Schmiett. Broge is dead. Long live Broge. It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my brother Bill Schmiett. He passed away this morning (Dec 11). His battle with liver disease is over. He died with his wife and best friend, Julie, by his side. He battled with resolve until the very end. Bill made 66 trips around the sun.

Chips for Kids Toy Drive 2018 |

San Andreas, CA...The California Highway Patrol and Santa’s Express, are once again, teaming up for the annual CHiPs for Kids Toy Drive. The toys will be given to hospitalized and disadvantaged children in Calaveras County just before the Christmas holiday. You can help by bringing new, unwrapped, toys which will be donated to Santa’s Express. CHiPs for Kids collection barrels have been placed around the county at various locations. Toys will be collected until Thursday, December 13, 2018. Collection barrels are at the following locations: California Highway Patrol – San Andreas. Angels Camp Business Association – Angels Camp.
