Angels Camp, CA...Michelle "Shell" Ponte, 22, of Angels Camp passed away at her home in Angels Camp. She was currently attending college working towards her degree in nursing, following in her Grandma Jane Ponte's footsteps. Her goal was to work in obstetrics. Michelle was a 2011 graduate of Bret Harte High School where she was involved in high school yearbook and took stats for several football seasons. She also enjoyed community service activities and was instrumental in reaching out to young voters in her mother's election to the Board of Supervisors in 2012.

Roy Edward Hillabush Jr 1933 to 2015 |

Valley Springs, CA...Roy Edward Hillabush Jr., age 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, June 26, 2015. He was born in Batavia, New York on October 12, 1933 to Roy and Evelyn Hillabush. He served in the military from 1951-1954. On July 2, 1955 Roy married Joyce Curry. Throughout his life he faithfully served his God and church as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Elder. He was currently a member of the Clements Community Church. As a school board member, Boy Scout leader and Child Evangelism Fellowship treasurer he shared his wisdom. Roy was a gifted mechanic and talented woodworker and enjoyed making wooden toys for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and all.

Iryna Elisabeth Maybrook 4/13/1931 – 6/23/2015 |

Plymouth, CA...Iryna passed away peacefully at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital after surviving a serious stroke in 2012 that left her paralyzed but never broke her loving spirit. She was born Irma Elisabeth Baumler in Bamburg, Germany on April 13, 1931 and grew up in Bad Staffelstein, Germany. After serving as governess to a diplomat’s children in London and Beirut, she immigrated to the United States at age 27 and moved to Chicago, IL, where she married Billie Johnson in 1960. She and Billie had four children and were blessed with two granddaughters. She was incredibly devoted to her family as well as her friends and community. In later years she worked happily doing the Lord’s work at Moriah Heights, where she served as Treasurer for the Hope Foundation until 2007. In 1998, Billie passed away, and in 1999 she remarried widower Mike Maybrook, with whom she shared a loving life until Mike’s death in 2007... |

Murphys, CA...Donald Lloyd Mitchell, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Murphys, CA on June 18, 2015 with his two daughters at his side. Donald was born in Fresno, CA and graduated from high school in Oakland. He married Janice Jean Pike in 1941. When WWII began, he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific. On his return, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a printer. He worked for the Modesto Bee as a linotype operator and a machinist for 27 years. After retiring, Don and Jan moved to Murphys where he enjoyed golf, computers, piloting airplanes, playing his guitar, and riding his Moto Guzzi.

Angels Camp, CA...Joanie Cooke, 74, passed away peacefully in her home on June 5, 2015 after a long illness. Joanie was born in Martinez, California to Patricia and Clarence Clinkscale. Though Joanie was a long-time resident of Concord, CA she resided in Angels Camp the last seven years of her life.

Jerry Franklin Martin 1932 - 2015 - Former Calaveras High Teacher |

Angels Camp, CA...Jerry Franklin Martin, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and teacher to thousands of students, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 22, 2015 at his home of 52 years. Jerry was born on July 26, 1932 in Balmorhea, Texas to Bruce Rector Martin Sr. and Jennie Mae Martin. He was raised in West Texas and was a proud Texan. He was drafted into the Army where he served in Germany during the Korean Conflict, then came to Oakland, California where he met Barbara Van Slyke on a blind date. He and Barbara were married on December 15, 1955. He convinced Barbara to move back to Texas so he could finish his education at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. Jerry also taught high school in Alpine, then moved his young family to California in 1961, where he went to work at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. In August of 1963, Jerry accepted a teaching position at Calaveras High School and moved the family to Angels Camp.
