William Warren Schmiett Nov. 24, 1952 – Dec. 11, 2018, Bill's Party is Feb. 9 at Noon

Mountain Ranch, CA...William Warren Schmiett Born Nov. 24, 1952—died Dec. 11, 2018. Bill made 66 trips around the sun. A native Californian, Bill was born in Griffith Park in Los Angeles County, and later moved as a young child with his family to Sunnyvale, CA. Bill spent most of his adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Calaveras County. He and his wife moved full time to Mountain Ranch in 2001, were burnt out during the Butte Fire in 2015, and relocated to Mokelumne Hill in 2017. After travelling to Mexico over several years, Bill became enamored with the Mexican people and culture, as well as becoming fluent in Spanish. Bill was creating a lovely retreat home for himself and his wife in El Pescadero, BCS Mexico.

Steve Burg 1938 - 2019

Murphys, CA...Steve Burg of Murphys, passed away at the age of 81 on January 25, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sue, daughter, Shari Hawkins, son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cynthia Burg, 4-grandchildren, and 2-great-grandchildren. Steve was born and raised in New England, graduating from high school in 1955 and going on to attend Boston University where he studied business. Steve built a professional career that included work in commercial real estate and financial investment consulting. In his retirement years, after settling in the Sierra foothills, Steve volunteered as a docent and ultimately attained a job at Big Trees State Park, a place he coveted dearly.

Deceased Identified as Matthew Dale Bryan of Sonora...Foul Play Not Suspected

Sonora, CA...From TCSO..."The man found deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Matthew Dale Bryan of Sonora. Matthew was reported missing by his family on December 10, 2018. Cause of death is pending as an autopsy is being conducted but foul play is not suspected at this time. We send out sincerest condolences to Matthew’s family and friends."

Doris Anna Porovich 1924 - 2019

Angels Camp, CA...Doris Anna Porovich, 94, of Angels Camp, passed away on January 23, 2019, in Sonora, California, after a short battle with cancer. She was born on December 14, 1924, to Thomas and Belle Ann Sleeman of Jamestown, California. Surviving are her children, Gary Porovich (Siri) of Eureka, Nevada, and David Porovich (Laura) of Jamestown; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives in Calaveras County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Porovich, and her daughter, Donna McGeorge.

Modesto Man Lost His Life & Three Injured in Hwy 108/120 Collision

Jamestown, CA...On Saturday, January 26, 2019, at approximately 6:06 pm, 37 year old driver Billy Thao and 43 year old passenger Brad Thao, both from Sacramento, were traveling westbound on State Route 120 in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, east of La Grange Road. 29 year old driver Muruganandham Arulandham and 24 year old passenger Cindhu Elamuazhuthz, both from Sunnyvale, were traveling westbound on State Route 120 in a 2018 Toyota Rav4, to the rear of Thao. A 55 year old Modesto resident was driving a 1995 Mazda 626 eastbound on State Route 120 east of La Grange Road approaching Thao's Tacoma. For unknown reasons the driver of the Mazda failed to safely negotiate the slight right curve in the roadway and crossed into the westbound lane into Thao's path. Thao was unable to take evasive action before the front of the Mazda struck the front of the Tacoma.

Murphys, CA...Georgia Clark Everson Oct. 9, 1931 – Jan. 17, 2019. Georgia passed peacefully with family by her side after a short illness. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, sister, companion and friend. She was preceded in death by her beloved Grandson Tim “TJ” Everson Jr, husband Warren Everson of Friday Harbor WA., husband Brad VanNoate of Lodi Ca, fiancé Peter Karpa of Murphys CA and parents Jim and Dot Clark of Ashland OR.

Explosion Kills Four Americans in Manbij

Manbig, Syria...Two U.S. servicemembers, one Department of Defense (DoD) civilian and one contractor supporting DoD were killed and three servicemembers were injured while conducting a local engagement in Manbij, Syria, Jan. 16, 2019. Initial reports indicate an explosion caused the casualties, and the incident is under investigation.

Jennifer Gabriel Goerlitz 1963 - 2018

Angels Camp, CA...Jennifer Gabriel Goerlitz, January 21, 1963 – December 17, 2018. Jennifer was born in Sunnyvale and relocated with her family to Arnold in 1976. After attending Hazel Fischer Elementary and Bret Harte High School, she moved to San Luis Obispo where she earned a degree in Agricultural Business Management from Cal Poly University. Jennifer moved back to Calaveras County where she worked for 30 years in the UC Cooperative Extension - Calaveras County, as the 4-H Program Coordinator. Additionally, she also served as the 4-H Program Representative for Amador and Tuolumne counties.

Celebration of Life on January 18th for Rev. Barbara Fair

Murphys, CA...Former longtime Calaveras County resident, Rev. Barbara Fair passed away November 20, 2019. Barbara and her husband Trent Fair lived in the Murphy’s / Douglas Flat area for 30 plus years. She was the founder and minister for the Community Faith Center; she also served as a Chaplin for the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and the Mark Twain Medical Center. A “Life Celebration” is planned for January 19, 2019 at 11am, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East Street, Woodland, CA.
