Explosion Kills Four Americans in Manbij |

Manbig, Syria...Two U.S. servicemembers, one Department of Defense (DoD) civilian and one contractor supporting DoD were killed and three servicemembers were injured while conducting a local engagement in Manbij, Syria, Jan. 16, 2019. Initial reports indicate an explosion caused the casualties, and the incident is under investigation.

Angels Camp, CA...Jennifer Gabriel Goerlitz, January 21, 1963 – December 17, 2018. Jennifer was born in Sunnyvale and relocated with her family to Arnold in 1976. After attending Hazel Fischer Elementary and Bret Harte High School, she moved to San Luis Obispo where she earned a degree in Agricultural Business Management from Cal Poly University. Jennifer moved back to Calaveras County where she worked for 30 years in the UC Cooperative Extension - Calaveras County, as the 4-H Program Coordinator. Additionally, she also served as the 4-H Program Representative for Amador and Tuolumne counties.

Murphys, CA...Former longtime Calaveras County resident, Rev. Barbara Fair passed away November 20, 2019. Barbara and her husband Trent Fair lived in the Murphy’s / Douglas Flat area for 30 plus years. She was the founder and minister for the Community Faith Center; she also served as a Chaplin for the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and the Mark Twain Medical Center. A “Life Celebration” is planned for January 19, 2019 at 11am, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East Street, Woodland, CA.

Arnold, CA...Former Arnold resident, owner of Arnold Welding, and U.S. Army veteran, Vernon Lee “Archie” Lowry, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2019 in Auburn, California. Archie was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 37 years, Clara Boyce Lowry. Archie is survived by his wife Pat Grigsby, children Barbara Ann Perry (Mark), Mary Marguarite Lowry, and Terry Lowry (Darlett), as well as six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Archie was a member of the Arnold Rotary Club for many years as well as an active Mason, Shriner, and Elks Club member.

Angels Camp, CA...Janet Mary Bailey, 84, lovingly known as Mom and Nonie passed away on January 6, 2019 with family and friends by her side. The daughter of Silvio and Desdemona Rossetti, Janet was born in San Francisco but spent most of her life in Calaveras County, where her father Silvio, started Rossetti’s Restaurant in Wallace in 1923. Janet, a graduate of Calaveras High School was crowned Belle of the Camp in 1951. She then moved to San Francisco where she started her career as a legal secretary. There in San Francisco she met and married Art Novotny. They moved back to Calaveras County where she called home the rest of her life.

Elizabeth “Betsy” M. Stewart 1944 - 2018 |

Angels Camp, CA...In the very early morning hours on December 24, 2018 our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother Elizabeth “Betsy” M. Stewart peacefully passed away with her family by her side in Eugene, Oregon. She was born on December 8, 1944 in her family home Star City, Indiana to Lawrence and Letha Siebert. It was there, in that very small town, that “Momma” taught her skills of gardening, cooking, canning, baking, preserving foods, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and needlework that would later become her calling in serving others for the rest of her life. Betsy would go with her “Momma” to the town community donation center to work, and help the needy. This early work as a child, made a huge impression on her young life.

Arnold, CA...Ronald Lee Modler passed away on December 28, 2018 at Adventist Health in Sonora, CA at the age of 63. Born in September 16, 1955 in Sterling, IL and was a Contractor until his retirement. In his younger years he would ride and train horses. He was in multiple competitions and shows bucking and trick riding on horses. He also enjoyed helping out in the family business of training and showing Kerry Blue Terrier dogs in Iowa. He enjoyed walking, making origami flowers which he loved to hand out to people he met on his walks, and spending time with his family, especially his Grandchildren.

Ione Woman Lost Life in Vehicle vs Tree Collision on SR-124 |

Ione, CA...A 62 year old Ione Woman was traveling northbound on SR-124 north of Waterman Road in her Toyota Camry in the northbound lane, at an unknown speed. Forunknown reasons she allowed her Toyota veered off the roadway, she lost control of the vehicle and subsequently collided with a tree and overturned. She was partially ejected from her vehicle and succumbed to her injuries.

Newman, CA...Below is the Press Conference after Capture of Suspect in Killing of Newman Police Officer. From the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Dept..."Our search for the man who killed Newman Police Corporal Ronil Singh has ended. Kern County Sheriff’s deputies captured 32-year-old Gustavo Perez Arriaga this morning at a home in Bakersfield. Arriaga has been arrested and will be transported to Stanislaus County. Arriaga will be charged with homicide.

Memorial Fund Set Up For Slain Newman Police Officer as Search Continues for His Killer |

Newman, CA...Newman Police Officer Ronil Singh (33) was shot and killed during a traffic stop just before 1:00 AM on 12/26/18. At 12:57 AM, Officer Singh called off on a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman. A few moments later he called out “shots fired” over the radio. Multiple agencies responded to assist and Singh was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
