Calaveras Wine Country Has Lost Stephen Collum, One of the Greats!

Murphys, CA...The Calaveras wine industry has lost a great mentor, innovator, vineyard manager and friend. Stephen Collum, 64, the founder of Murphys-based Vineyard Concepts consulting and management company, passed suddenly on August 11th at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stockton.  Members of the Calaveras Wine Industry Remember Steve as a dear friend, mentor, innovator, educator and community builder.

The Community Turned out for Matt Romero's Celebration of Life Procession

Douglas Flat, CA...This morning friends, family, coworkers, law enforcement & fire fighters took park in a Celebration of Life Procession that started in Angels Camp and wound its way through many of Matt's favorite places and finished up traveling through Murphys. They were not going to let COVID prevent them from giving their friend a proper send off. Below is some video and photos from today and we included his obituary for those of you who may not have known Matt to get to know him a bit better...Matthew Raymond Romero passed away peacefully on July 27,2020 in his childhood home in Douglas Flat. Matt is preceded in death by his parents, Raul and Miriam Romero. He was born on May 20, 1969, a lifelong resident of Calaveras County, and a graduate of Bret Harte High School.

Matt was an employee of Sam Berry Towing and we all have had many interactions with him. RIP Friend from all of us at Angels Camp and Altaville Melones Fire Departments."

All Eight Service Members Presumed Deceased in Training Accident after Search Concludes

Camp Pendleton, CA...After an extensive 40-hour search, the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group concluded their search and rescue operation for seven missing Marines and one Sailor, today. All eight service members are presumed deceased The 15th MEU and the ARG leadership determined that there was little probability of a successful rescue given the circumstances of the incident.


A U.S. Navy MH-60 Seahawk pilot returns to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD-8) during ongoing search and rescue operations following an AAV-P7/A1 assault amphibious vehicle mishap off the coast of Southern California, July 30, 2020. Assisting in the search and rescue operations are the guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn (DDG 113), multiple U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopters and small boats from USS Makin Island, the amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD 25), the amphibious transport dock USS San Diego (LPD 22), as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego. 75 Year Old Groveland Man Lost His Life in Fatal Traffic Collision Yesterday

Groveland, CA...On July 29, 2020, at approximately 2:50pm, a 75-year-old male resident of Groveland was driving his 2009 Toyota Pickup westbound on Ferretti Road, west of Otter Court at approximately 35-40 miles per hour. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the north shoulder and collided into a tree. The driver was extricated from the vehicle by other motorist and life saving measures were performed. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Wayne S. Segale July 11, 1946 - July 22, 2020

Vallecito, CA...Wayne Stuart Segale, age 74 of Vallecito, passed away on July 22, 2020. He was born July 11, 1946 in Stockton Ca. and was a lifelong resident of Calaveras County. He was the youngest child of Lewis and Laverne Segale and if you ask his sister, he acted like it! Wayne attended Bret Harte High School and was in the 1965 graduating class. He joined the Operating Engineers Local Union #3 at an early age and received his 50-year pin recently, he was proud of that.

World War II Vet Marion Leroy Ruthrauff Passed Away on July 3rd

Calaveritas, CA...Marion Leroy Ruthrauff passed peacefully July 3, 2020, surrounded by his loving family in the home he built. Marion was born to Eunita Summer Rives and Otto Martin Ruthrauff in South Haven, Kansas. Marion was the oldest of three farm boys, all of whom fought in World War II. Marion served as a military police officer in the 12th armored division in the US Army from March 1944-July 1946.

First COVID-19 Death Recorded in Calaveras County is Male over 65

San Andreas, CA...On Monday, July 20, 2020, Calaveras Public Health confirmed the first death of a Calaveras County resident from complications related to COVID-19 illness. The individual was a male over the age of 65 who resided in District 4. The individual tested positive for the virus. He was unable to recover and passed away in hospice at home. The individual had underlying health conditions. HIPAA privacy rules regulate the sharing of protected health information. No additional information is available about the individual.
