Murphys, CA...It seemed as most of Bear Valley and the extended Bear Valley community turned out for the funeral of David Johnston this afternoon in Murphys. Parking was scarce on the south end of town and I even heard a tourist wonder if there was a special event going on. In fact there was...it was the celebration of a "Man Among Men" which was a phrase heard consistently to describe the man who's life touched so many...

Forest to prepare Environmental Impact Statement for Candy Rock Quarry

Sonora, CA…Stanislaus Forest Supervisor Susan Skalski today announced that the Forest Service published a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Candy Rock Quarry Management in the Federal Register. The proposed action would include permanent limitations on recreational target shooting, road management and other management features at the Candy Rock Quarry near Hathaway Pines, California....

Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. Tonight: Scattered snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Southwest wind between 5 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected...

Arnold, CA...David James Johnston, of Arnold California passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012, surrounded by his loving wife, sister and children. David Johnston was a native of Bisbee, Arizona and lived almost his entire life in California. He fought a courageous battle against cancer but God finally brought him home to run Heaven’s grocery store. He graduated from Manteca High School and was a member of the marching band. From his 15th birthday he worked at Peter’s Market and became a co-owner years later. David relocated to Bear Valley thirty years ago and owned the Bear Valley General Store. He was a local businessman and very active in community affairs, including the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce and Bear Valley Business Association. He was beloved throughout the area and touched many lives in a positive and generous manner. He is survived by his loving wife, Beth Johnston of Arnold, sister Ellen of French Camp, daughters Shelly of Lodi, ....

Big Trees Village, CA...The release is now in on an accident that caused major injuries to a 31 year old San Jose man on on 2/12/12. He was driving his 2009 GMC Pickup eastbound on Hwy 4 approaching Big Trees State Park when he failed to negotiate a sharp left hand curve, his truck left the roadway to the right and struck a large tree...

Big Trees Village, CA..Emergency Crews are working a major injury accident where a GMC Pickup has gone into a tree on Hwy 4 near Big Trees Parkway. One injured party was life flighted out. Please use caution in the area....
