Donnell Fire Swells to 29,569 Acres, Most Growth on Northwest Edge

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/14/2018 09:11 AM
Pinecrest, CA...Fire spread was minimal overnight, primarily along the northwest fire edge in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness where Wildland Fire Modules are spiked out and will be working today. Overnight, crews continued to enhance containment lines along the southern and eastern flanks of the fire and to do structure protection including within the Haypress area. Today, thunderstorms are forecast for the early afternoon. These could bring gusty and erratic winds up to 35 mph to the east side of the fire, resulting in the loss of some air support. High winds also increase the potential for spot fires, embers blowing up to 1,000 feet from the fire’s edge. Structure protection and hazard tree abatement remain the priority. Green pockets within the fire perimeter still exist and continue to be treated in several locations. Direct line from the Bennett Juniper to the Douglas Day Use Area on Highway108 will continue to be constructed today, with crews working from both the north and south directions.

Donnell Fire Heat Map...

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/14/2018 12:07 PM
Bear Valley, CA...We normally don't publish the heat maps of the fires because they can be inaccurate and show heated air aloft etc. We thought this recent one of the Donnell Fire was illustrative though. It shows they are making good progress taking the heat out of the fire for much of the perimeter. On the south side of Spicer Reservoir you can see where the bulk of the fire's energy is today. Luckily there is plenty of water in the area for helicopter drops and Spicer should provide a barrier to growth to the north. Let's just hope firefighters can keep it from spotting or making turns around the lake.

Crews Made Good Progress on Donnell Fire Today

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/14/2018 09:00 PM
Pinecrest, CA...Wildland Fire Modules made significant progress on the west side of the fire in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. Helicopters were able to support the modules by dropping water on the fire throughout the day. In addition, Helirappellers were inserted to construct a helicopter landing area (helispot) west of the fire boundary. On the southern and eastern flanks of the fire, crews continued to mop up and enhance containment lines. Afternoon thunderstorms on the eastern third of the fire forced firefighters to suspend operations early in the day. Night crews will focus on structure protection and mop up on the south eastern side of the fire. Crews in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness will continue operations tomorrow morning when they can safely navigate the terrain reducing the likelihood of accidents or injuries.

The Donnell Fire Now 28,302 Acres, 20% Contained & 135 Structures Destroyed

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/13/2018 09:14 AM
Pinecrest, CA...Additional firefighters arrived throughout the day on Sunday. These crews will bolster those already making good progress on the fire. Last night, crews were able to contain a 20 acre spot fire in the Eagle Creek drainage, about 2 miles north of Eagle Meadow. Today line construction will continue from the Bennett Juniper to Highway 108, completing line on the southeast corner of the fire. Eastern progression of the fire has slowed. The fire remains about a half mile from Kennedy Meadows, on the north side of Highway 108. Wildland Fire Use crews spiked out (self-contained units staying on site) in the west side of the fire will continue cutting hand line today. Residual heat and fire damaged trees remain a hazard for crews mopping up around structures along Highway 108.

Sierra Pacific Industries Forestland in California Closed Due to Fire Danger

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/13/2018 11:19 AM
Anderson, CA - Due to extreme wildfire conditions and risk to lives and property, Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) has closed its forestlands in California. SPI takes pride in allowing non-motorized public access for hunting and other recreational values but must take this action to protect resources and public safety. This follows similar announcements by other industrial timberland owners throughout the western United States. This closure will be in effect until conditions change.

The Donnell Fire Morning Update...27,769 Acres, 20% Contained, Fire Edges Closer to Spicer

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/12/2018 09:39 AM
Pinecrest, CA...The fire laid down slightly through the night. As temperatures drop and humidity rises the fire is expected to be fuels driven less than wind driven so low fuel moistures and spotting will remain a concern. Structure protection continued ahead of the fire as it progressed slowly in an easterly direction at Kennedy Meadows and northeasterly out of Disaster Creek. Firefighters are making headway in an effort to protect Bennett Juniper by cutting hand and dozer line across Eagle Drainage. Mop up and hazard tree removal will continue in green pockets between structures along Hwy 108. Wildland use modules will continue working on the south-side of Spicer Reservoir in Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.
