Renowned Neuroscientist Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph. D. Comes to Calaveras County for a Workshop on Childhood Trauma, February 21, 2014

San Andreas – Calaveras County professionals, parents, and interested community members will have a rare local opportunity to learn from a leading authority on childhood brain development this February. Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D, Senior Fellow of the Child Trauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston, TX, and adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Finberg School of Medicine, will present a day-long workshop entitled “Understanding Childhood Trauma-Creating a Trauma-Informed Community,” Friday, February 21, 2014, 8:15 am – 4:15 pm at the San Andreas Community Town Hall, 24 Church Street in San Andreas. Angels Camp, CA....A small group of local residents are working together to encourage and promote random acts of kindness throughout Calaveras county. In 1995, the Angels Camp City Council passed a proclamation that Angels Camp is a Kindness Zone. Once again we are asking the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to pass a county-wide Kindness Zone proclamation as well. (both the city and county have proclaimed kindness zones)...

The 99 cent Pet First Aid app gives iPhone and Android smart phone users instant access to expert information so they learn how to maintain their pet’s health and what to do during emergencies. “Pet owners learn how to recognize health problems and when to contact their veterinarian,” said Kathleen Weis, CEO for the Red Cross Capital Region. “The Pet First Aid App provides step-by-step instructions, videos and images for more than 25 common first aid and emergency situations including how to treat wounds, control bleeding, and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies.”

Mark Twain Medical Center Awards $26,000 in Community Grants to Non Profit Organizations

San Andreas, CA...Yesterday Mark Twain Medical Center continued their tradition of helping in the community. They held their Annual Awards Luncheon at the hospital where the 6 organizations were chosen to receive grants from a total of 19 who applied. The awardees are: Arc of Amador and Calaveras – (provides support and services to persons with developmental disabilities to encourage mainstream life, work, learning and recreation). Disability Resource Agency for Independent (supports the independence of individuals with disabilities through resources, advocacy and services). Ebbetts Pass Firefighters Association (CPR classes and AED education for community). San Andreas Community Covenant Church (to provide free community meals every Wednesday). Resource Connection - Food Bank (serves 2,523 families-accounting for 17% of the population of Calaveras County). The Volunteer Center (mileage reimbursement to volunteers that provide transportation to vulnerable citizens)...
