Major Changes in Emergency Services Result in Positive Impacts for our Community

In the past seven months, two major changes in the Emergency Department have had a positive impact on three performance indicators: “door to doctor times”, “left without being seen”, and “patients returning within 72 hours”; but more on this later.....

British University Study Shows Type 2 Diabetes Cured By Ultra Low Cal Diet

Newcastle, UK...A Newcastle University team has discovered that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed by an extreme low calorie diet alone. Affecting two and half million people in the UK – and on the increase – Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition caused by too much glucose, a type of sugar, in the blood. In an early stage clinical trial of 11 people, funded by Diabetes UK, all reversed their diabetes by drastically cutting their food intake to just 600 calories a day for two months. And three months later, seven remained free of diabetes...

Hot summer weather should be here just in time for your 4th of July weekend & that has everybody thinking of getting out on the water! Our kayak sales &rentals have been very brisk these past couple weeks. If you're thinking about renting a boat in Arnold this weekend, Saturday is almost sold out, but we have good availability on Sunday & Monday. Don't forget - we havestand-up paddleboards (SUP) in our rental fleet & young people love 'em. It's a great workout & it's fun. See you on the water!!

Mark Twain St. Joseph's 4th Summer Career Camp a Success

San Andreas, CA...We had the pleasure to attend the graduation ceremony for great 4th Annual Summer Health Career Camp that Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital hosted last week. Thus year's Camp was entirely made up of Calaveras High School students and was held at the hospital campus in San Andreas. The Camps are open to local high school juniors and seniors who have a desire to gain more knowledge about careers in health care. The week-long project included a complete orientation and tour of the facility, four days of “job shadowing” with hospital staff, networking with hospital staff and leadership at special luncheons, vocational orientation to over 70 health care careers, and a special student/parent graduation luncheon on the last class day....

MTSJ Breaks Ground on New Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital broke ground on June 13th for a new “fixed-site” Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility on the hospital’s campus in San Andreas. The new Imaging Center, with its General Electric 1.5 Tesla MRI system, will replace the mobile unit now in use. “All of us at Mark Twain are excited about the new fixed MRI” said hospital president Feliciano. “The new facility will provide greater access to health care for our community, and will actually enable us to lower our operating costs while providing a long-term approach for enhanced patient experience.” The new General Electric 1.5 Tesla EchoSpeed 8-Channel MR system provides Hi-Definition data pipeline architecture and advanced applications. The opening of the new Imaging Center is scheduled for August....

Mark Twain St. Joseph's Opens "Comfort Care" Room

Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital announced this week the opening of its “comfort care” room, focusing on the relief of pain and discomfort in the patient experiencing a major illness or end of life. “Patients have special needs when they have a serious chronic or life-threatening illness” said hospital president Feliciano Jiron. “Anxiety, dignity, spiritual needs, and future health issues are all valid concerns for patients and their families. Patients approaching the end of life with distressing symptoms, patients with serious chronic or life-threatening illness, and patients and families facing difficult decisions about complex medical issues can all benefit from this new service.”
