California Public Health Experts: Mass Gatherings Should be Postponed or Canceled Statewide to Slow the Spread of COVID-19

Sacramento, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California public health officials this evening issued an updated policy on gatherings to protect public health and slow the spread of COVID-19. The state’s public health experts have determined that gatherings should be postponed or canceled across the state until at least the end of March. Non-essential gatherings must be limited to no more than 250 people, while smaller events can proceed only if the organizers can implement social distancing of 6 feet per person. Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people, while also following social distancing guidelines.

Geneva, Switzerland...Good afternoon. In the past two weeks, the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has increased 13-fold, and the number of affected countries has tripled. There are now more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries, and 4,291 people have lost their lives. Thousands more are fighting for their lives in hospitals. In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths, and the number of affected countries climb even higher. WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction. We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.
US Suspends Travel Between US and Europe for 30 days due to Coronavirus

Washington, DC...President Donald Trump said Wednesday in his national address that he is suspending all travel between the U.S. and Europe for 30 days beginning Friday as the US seeks to combat a viral pandemic. The UK will be exempt from the ban. The ban is expected to go into effect this Friday.
Coronavirus Arrives Locally as Two Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Copperopolis

San Andreas, CA...On March 10, 2020, following the informational update to the Board of Supervisors regarding novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Calaveras Public Health received confirmation that two members of a family in Copperopolis tested positive for COVID-19. Their exposure to COVID-19 occurred outside of Calaveras County. One of those community members is a child, who is currently enrolled at Copperopolis Elementary School. Public Health officials are coordinating with local schools on further actions. The family has remained isolated at home since this investigation began. Public Health is identifying persons who may have had close personal contact with these individuals, including friends or family members. Close personal contacts identified during this investigation will be quarantined. “With the discovery of these new cases, we may see additional cases of COVID-19 in the community,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. The Health Officer will also declare a public health emergency effective 4:00PM on March,10, 2020.

Secaucus, NJ...Quest Diagnostics (NYSE: DGX), the world's leading provider of diagnostic information services, has launched a coronavirus (COVID-19) test service. The new test service aids the presumptive detection of nucleic acid in respiratory specimens of patients meeting CDC's clinical criteria for COVID-19 testing. Quest was in position to receive specimens for testing, and begin to provide testing on Monday, March 9, 2020. With the new service, Quest Diagnostics will provide access to a COVID-19 test service for patients in the United States.

All of our counties have less than 20 people per square mile. Your can help keep our local small businesses humming along as well. Calaveras Cases Linked to Cruise Ship Test Negative for Coronavirus

San Andreas, CA...On March 6, 2020, Calaveras Public Health received test results from cases linked to the Grand Princess Cruise ship that departed from San Francisco on February 11, traveled to Mexico, and returned on February 21. Those tests came back negative.
