Murphys, CA...The United States Declaration of Independence declares "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Without good health, where is the possibility for the pursuit of happiness? As the Declaration's primary author, Thomas Jefferson, would later write, "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government." University of Texas Students to Bicycle 4000 miles to Support Cancer Care! Meet Then In Murphys June 25th

Murphys CA...Texas 4000 Riders to Meet Cancer Patients. The Mark Twain Cancer Center will welcome the Texas 4000 to beautiful downtown Murphys Park on the afternoon of Sunday, June 25th. This peloton of University of Texas student/athletes will pedal the brutal 4000 miles from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska to support cancer awareness and prevention. The welcome celebration will include the rider’s sharing tales of their adventure with the audience, and connecting with current oncology patients. Included are a bar-b-que, and music by the LavaCats starting at 3 PM. For information, call the Mark Twain Cancer Center at 209-754-9670.

Calaveras County Public Health Issues Heat Advisory to Residents

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County Health and Human Services Agency - Public Health Division continues to issue a heat advisory for the County. We urge the public to act now to prevent heat-related illness. Temperatures of 100 degrees or more will continue over the next several days. Dr. Kelaita, County Health Officer, stated, “Taking action now can prevent the possibility of heat-related illness. Some health conditions such as obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn and drug/alcohol use can make it harder for the body to stay cool in hot weather.”

Jackson, CA...Sutter Medical Group, affiliated with Sutter Medical Foundation, awarded $3,000 to Hospice of Amador & Calaveras (HOAC) on June 15th as part of their most recent Philanthropy Program funding period. Hospice of Amador & Calaveras will use the grant to bolster two critical programs: Griefbusters and We Honor Veterans.

Medical Center’s Golf Tournament Raises $50,400 For Free Mobile Health Clinic

Sonora, June 21, 2017 - Thanks to the generous support of 56 event sponsors, 129 golfers, plus donors and volunteers, Sonora Regional Medical Center’s 17th Annual Golf Classic on June 14 at Saddle Creek Golf Resort raised $50,400 for Project HOPE, its free mobile health van. Staffed by a nurse practitioner, the heath van is stationed at the Crossroads shopping center twice a week and Interfaith once a month, to provide free basic healthcare services to people who have no health insurance or who are underinsured.


Black Oak Casino Resort’s Aaron Moss, Ron Patel, Ed Wickman and BJ Nelson at the Medical Center’s Golf Classic.

Freedom From Smoking Class Begins in July

Sonora, CA...Sonora Regional Medical Center is offering the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® course beginning July 11. Classes will meet at Pulmonary Rehabilitation, located at 19747 Greenley Road, each Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for seven weeks. Freedom From Smoking provides a supportive group environment where adults work through the quitting process together with guidance from a respiratory therapist. According to the American Lung Association, “Research has proven that the more time a smoker spends in a supportive situation, the more likely he or she is to succeed. People who use [Freedom From Smoking] are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who quit on their own.”

Murphys, CA...If you draw a graph of the American health care system, it looks like a home-stitched quilt made by someone that cannot see. Nothing fits together -- not the colors, the design, or the function. There are a lot of reasons for this picture, but how we fund health care is the single biggest problem.
