Angels Camp Business Association Weighs in on Visitors Center ~By Bob Menary

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/30/2010 12:24 AM
Angels Camp, CA...Dear Mayor Lynch and Council Members: I am writing on behalf of the Angels Camp Business Association Board of Directors and our eighty member businesses to urge the City Council to do everything in its power to keep the Calaveras Visitors Bureau’s Visitors Center in historic downtown Angels Camp. The Visitors Center serves as a magnet for visitors and residents alike. It attracts visitors to the county to stop at the rest area and to visit the Center’s shop. It expects nearly 13,000 visitors in the Center this year alone. Many of those visitors then take the time to walk up and down Main Street to shop, dine, view the historic buildings and read the Jumping Frog plaques. We believe that without the Center and its services, most of those visitors will not come into Angels Camp, much less stop to shop and dine...

The Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy ~By Chairman Ben S. Bernanke

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/27/2010 08:26 AM
Jackson Hole, WY...The annual meeting at Jackson Hole always provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the economic and financial developments of the preceding year, and recently we have had a great deal on which to reflect. A year ago, in my remarks to this conference, I reviewed the response of the global policy community to the financial crisis.1 On the whole, when the eruption of the Panic of 2008 threatened the very foundations of the global economy, the world rose to the challenge, with a remarkable degree of international cooperation,...

Weekly Market Update Week of August 23, 2010. ~By Donna Stevenson, Pacific West Financial

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/27/2010 08:57 AM
Copperopolis, CA...THE MARKETS: Stocks faced another choppy week as concerns surrounding employment and slow economic growth combined with low trading volume to send indexes lower. For the week, the Dow shed 0.9% and the S&P 500 slid 0.7%. The Nasdaq managed a scant 0.3% gain. Even as a stellar earnings season draws to a close, strong corporate balance sheets haven’t been enough to bolster the faltering optimism of investors. Of the 484 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported so far, 75% have beat expectations according to Thompson Reuters (compared with a quarterly average of 62%). Despite this silver lining, the S&P 500 has lost about 0.1% since the beginning of earnings season on July 12th....
