Economy Adds 222,000 Jobs In June, Prior Months Revised Up

Washington, DC...Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 222,000 in June, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.4 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment increased in health care, social assistance, financial activities, and mining. Household Survey Data: In June, the unemployment rate, at 4.4 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 7.0 million, were little changed. Since January, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed are down by 0.4 percentage point and 658,000, respectively. (See

Arnold CA - Paula was a lifelong resident of Calaveras County. She was born in San Andreas and raised in Angels Camp. She attended Mark Twain Elementary and Bret Harte High. After graduating high school she worked at Hydrox Inc., Big Tree’s Market, Tim Magnusun DDS, and Mark Twain Hospital. Paula enjoyed cooking, painting, being a Nonna to granddaughter Ada, being around family and friends most of all.

Arnold, CA...GABA’s Arnold Independence Day Parade Preview With Linda Baker. Linda Baker of the Greater Arnold Business Association chose Paul Moeller to be the Grand Marshall for Arnold's July 4th Parade. Moeller is renowned for founding the Calaveras Community Television Public Access Group. Under his guidance, The volunteers built a studio considered the “jewel of the Mother Lode”. The Studio, which bears his name, is a major source of community pride. The Nearest Public Access studio to the foothills is in Sacramento.  “His accomplishments are so widespread throughout the county, I just felt he is someone under the radar. A person who should be recognized,” Baker said.

New Tax Rate on Tobacco Products Moves From 27.3 to 65.08 % Effective July 1, 2017

Sacramento, CA...On July 1, 2017, the tax rate on tobacco products other than cigarettes will increase from the current rate of 27.3 to 65.08 percent of the wholesale cost. In November 2016, California voters approved Proposition 56, which increased the excise tax rate on cigarettes, and expanded the definition of “tobacco products” to include little cigars, tobacco and nicotine intended for human consumption, and electronic cigarettes sold in combination with nicotine.
